Looking for a good Bowie

A2 steel is supposed to be great. I must admit that I've never hard used my Bark River Bowies but they have a solid reputation. I own three from them; a Custom Bowie C, a Rogue Bowie and a Gambler Bowie. I have three because each time I buy one I think it's too pretty to use, put it in my display and eventually buy another to be a user only to put it in the display and repeat the process. :(

Dig the look of the Custom Bowie C.

Do you know of any decent damascus bowies? Only ones that come up on Google look pretty junk to me.

I still can't take my eyes off the Fallkniven NL line.

Bowies are originated from the USA, specifically from Alamo Texas.

LOL. Jim Bowie died at the Alamo, but the Bowie knife existed before he ever went to Texas, and there is no place called "Alamo Texas." The Alamo is in San Antonio, Texas.

As for where the knife originated, who knows. It become publicized after Bowie's infamous Sandbar fight, near Vidalia Louisiana.

I'm far from an expert on knives so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt but I think everything comes down to budget. I've seen plenty of beautiful damascus bowie knives from custom knife makers but they're typically at the very least $800.

The Fallkniven NL knives look beautiful to me but they look like Randalls and at that price, why not just buy an actual Randall?

Yep he was from Arkansas, but as I pointed out before its unclear where the knife even originated. We just know it was made famous by Jim Bowie.

I could possibly spend upwards $600, do like Randall's knives. I wonder how they compare with Fallkniven. The most expensive Fallkniven is $530 also btw.

I don't care where its from, just want the design. After all Bowie's originate in England did they not? I just want quality.

OK. That makes sense. Just because doing it one particular way happens to float my boat, doesn't mean it has to do it for you too.

if that's the case, have you checked out Svord's Von Tempsky Bowie? It's a pretty sick blade.

Cool blade! And cool history! Great pick, looking into reviews now.

Busse WTF

Good knives but extremely pricey.

I stand corrected, but Jack88 is definitely misinformed about the Bowie coming from England. There is no debate at all that the Clip Point Bowie blade originated from the USA.

It is debated where the design originated, as no one can even decide what a real "bowie" is other than a large knife. It does resemble an English butcher's knife however, just one of many possibilities. Sheffield England did begin mass producing clip point bowies as early as the 1830's.

Enough of the history though, didn't come hear to read history but to get suggestions for my next knife.

''Good knives but extremely pricey''
Do you mean overpriced? The Fallknivens are priced just about the same.

From what I've seen Busse's larger bowie style knives are $700+. If I didnt flinch at spending $500 I would already own a Fallkniven...

I've been looking at this Lon Humphrey Gunfighter Bowie. Still researching.

You can pick up a new WTF for 400-450. Have you looked at the Bark River 1909 Michigan Bowie? Look pretty sweet.

Good looking Bowie, I like the handle.

Yep Bark River is near the top of the list now

Right now from I've seen I'm looking at:

Fallkniven NL1 or NL2
Bark River 1909 Stacked Leather (I love the stacked leather handles)
Randall Model 12 Bowie

I've been eyeballing those. They have one with a stacked leather handle for under $300 too. That may be the ticket for Jack88.

Leaning in that direction as well, I can't find any decent reviews of them anywhere though which does concern me a bit.

Blind search the net for "damascus" and "knife" and you are 99.9% guaranteed to find something that isn't worth a fraction of its price.

I would suggest searching the knifemakers sale area here to see what you can find, but a good handmade bowie is likely to be pretty expensive.
