That Randall is a beaut, just high on the price side. I love the stacked leather look though.

Have you considered a kit blade that you finish yourself?
I'm a big fan...

Haven't looked any up yet, at some point in my life I'd love to get into some minor blacksmithing, my schedule is too crazy now being active military.. even though this rain has been keeping me from flying much ☔

Check out the Fallkniven krut in lam cos steel. Phenomenal stuff. Also have a look at Ed Martin knives. Something about his work just always catches my eye.

I love the look of the krut and hear really good things about the cobalt steel it's extremely tempting, but only coming in at 10" doesn't make it much of a bowie....

Hmmm so I have to pay for a membership to be able to message? That's kind of weak, are you able to PM me or what is your email?

And you aren't supposed to be doing transactions on this subforum.

We aren't allowed to email one another, I find that absurd. Not to mention how can I say I'm going to buy something without seeing it or even knowing a price. Thanks

I stand corrected, but Jack88 is definitely misinformed about the Bowie coming from England. There is no debate at all that the Clip Point Bowie blade originated from the USA.

As J Jack88 noted, your "Clip Point Bowie" thereory, is, how to put it, "misinformed."

And also, the original Bowie (The Sandbar Knife) was not a clip point.

Bowie's Sandbar knife (the Forrest knife, IMO), was a beefed up French butcher's knife/Mediterranean Dagger/puñal. All had been around for a while but whoever made the Sandbar knife combined them in a novel way that went, in effect, viral.

Who is stopping you from emailing each other? You need a certain membership to Private Message, but to email? No.

And you still cannot carry out transactions on this subforum.

Regardless of how "weak" or "absurd" you find it.

You speak with quite a bit of authority on something that is disputed among every historian covering the blade. His brother Rezin and John left conflicting stories of the entire event, as I previously said a Bowie knife itself isn't clearly defined. It could've easily been anything from an English butchers knife to a Spanish hunting knife. The entirety of the story is left most by Jim Bowie's brother Rezin who was far from a reliable source and saw a great monetary opportunity.

But AGAIN I didn't come here to argue about the origins of the blade because it is a dead end argument, there is no official bowie blade and will never be.

I've all but decided on the Fallkniven, love the look and has great reviews. I've looked into Busse's but the difficulty in dealing with that company seems far from worth it. Bark Rivers bowie's seem nice, but I'm unable to find a reputable review.

Excellent, then should he decide to give me his email and I have a private conversation it is no business of yours now is it?

Ah Marci, once again you bring out the gentle side of a newbie. ;) Also, another vote for the CS Trailmaster; mine has taken everything thrown at it for almost 30 years (Carbon V).

It does seem cold steel produces two distinct qualities of blades... total garbage on the low end but then higher quality stuff on their more expensive end. I own a pair of their axes and i can't say I'm impressed by their quality. The trailmaster seems like a good blade, but I think I'd buy their khukuri over it for my yearly (not always) Napali coast hike.. (only because my real khuk's steel wouldn't fair well in the salt water environment)

How well does the A2 steel perform? The same steel the Bark's River blades use.

Very good stuff. Bark River (same company) probably uses more A2 than any other. They got that shit down to a science.

I myself use A2 more than any other steel. In the world of powder metallurgy, A2 is still a very relevant tool steel.

Bark River now makes Blackjack knives and I had that for a few years now and can find nothing bad to say about it , has done everything I could ask of any knife.

Have to say I like the 1909 Michigan better due to its size, that stacked leather handle is purdy.

Glad to hear it, have been totally unable to find a decent review.

I've made that Na Pali hike a few times myself, In my opinion (you get what you pay for), you would fare better with a smaller blade (see Blackjack above).
