Looking for a good Bowie

I've made that Na Pali hike a few times myself, In my opinion (you get what you pay for), you would fare better with a smaller blade (see Blackjack above).

In my youth I carried just a beat up old machete that fared quite well out there, now I favor a khuk style blade for its wood chopping abilities. My winkler is near in size with those black jacks and a far superior make...

What do you think in comparison between the A2 steel and Fallkniven's VG10 or even Cobalt?

You speak with quite a bit of authority on something that is disputed among every historian covering the blade.

I've all but decided on the Fallkniven, love the look and has great reviews. I've looked into Busse's but the difficulty in dealing with that company seems far from worth it. Bark Rivers bowie's seem nice, but I'm unable to find a reputable review.

I do not claim to be an authority, but I have read materials on the subject written by people with a ton of authority on the subject. I suggest Bernard Levine's writings on the subject. They are based on historical documentation.

The Fallknivens are excellent knives. And they do not chip once the edge has been touched up. Before that they can have small "flakes" more than chips.

Excellent, then should he decide to give me his email and I have a private conversation it is no business of yours now is it?

No, in private, it isn't. But the two of you are having a conversation about it here in GKD.

Copy that is honestly my biggest concern with the VG10 steel, seen a couple reviews with the blade coming back extremely chipped, but then others where it performed gracefully and couldn't understand the disconnect.

Where is this conversation? He said he had a blade he may part with, that's the extent of any conversation. I'm not going to engage you again continuing in this manner, becoming an annoyance while I'm trying to gather information on multiple knife makes.

I'm not a fan of Fallkniven, too many chipping complaints for my taste (I know, I know they sharpen out Humbug-why deal with it?) Actually, O-1 is my favorite steel and doesn't tend to rust much more or much more easily than A2 IMO (again, note what you paid for it). Soooo, since you like Kuks, I suggest the CS Kuk in O-1. Ta Daaa!

I don't know about the CS San Mai, but the Fallkniven accounts are all over the place, and well known.

I'm definitely going to eventually buy that cold steel kukri But it doesn't fill my need for a Bowie.

Are you going to be chopping with it?

It's honestly going to be carried more as a combat knife for my bug out kit (I think) I just only buy quality gear and want it to have the capability. My M43 khukuri is far more suited for chopping by design (quite heavy to pack around though)

Where are all these actual accounts of chipping in Fallknives/San Mai CS?
Check YouTube I've seen a few accounts.

I'm getting a bit confused  (not uncommon). CS Trailmaster or Blackjack-Yeah, but I like Kukuris. OK, CS O-1 Kuk-Yeah but I want a bowie. One more try, CS O-1 Kuk AND Blackjack bowie. Little ta dah. And, No-I don't think it's blade care.

Even batoning through some gnarly desert ironwood here in AZ, I have not had any issues with chipping in my Fallkniven A2.

As a true fan ob Bowie styled fnives, my recommendations would be:

Low budget:
- Cold Steel Leatherneck
- KaBar
- Ontario SP1
- Ontario SP10
- Von Tempsky Bowie
- Cudeman Bowie
- Windlass 1880 Bowie
- Windlass Alamo Bowie
- Spyderco Fred Perrin

Mid budget:
- Cold Steel TrailMaster
- Al Mar Alaskan Bowie
- Cold Steel Laredo
- Cold Steel Natchez
- Ontario Bill Bagwell Bowie

High budget:
- Customs from Bill Bagwell, Don Hanson, Dark Timber, etc.

Ah another Arizonan native! I don't live there anymore but Tucson is my home town. The A2 is pretty much the same as the NL2/1, I just like the look on the NL series better. How is the sheathe that came with the blade?

Haha! I'm a traditionalist and looove my HI khukuri, it wouldn't fair well on the Napali though which is why I will eventually own the CS kuk. Eventually I'll own it all haha

Thank you for your well thought out response!

I am curious if it can be narrowed down to improper blade care.

No. Out of the box Fallknivens ARE known to flake. Something about the HT/grinding process. A simple touch up of the edge before use eliminates the flaking.

Where's @Mikael W when you need him?!?
