MagnaCut Mule Team crash

I scored with immense effort and help from forumites posting that it was working after giving up. Now my brother is going to get an awesome gift and I get to see if Magnacut lives up to the hype. I've avoided the desire to buy a custom piece and wait for Spyderco's heat treat to base my opinion on. Super excited.

Was out of cell service, Loading up dirt bikes, After a few nice days in the desert with the wife! Got on the road and saw my calendar reminder about Magnacut Mule😲
After climbing the big grade on Interstate 8, Wife had to use restroom! Logged on and got through in 10 minutes (8:53 Pacific) to get confirmation. We'll see if everything works out. Thanks Sal and Spyderco for this opportunity to buy a quality fixed in this new steel.

Looks like we're going to have to make some changes.

Sal:

If you haven't seen them already, for further comments about the experience from me and other here, please go to the "Delivered & Upcoming" thread, pages 41 & 42, starting w/Post #809, which you should find here.

FWIW, I don't mean to sound ungrateful but it was pretty awful. Only those willing to perservere (or lucky enough to log in at the "right" time) were rewarded w/a completed order.

You'll see my take on it in various posts in this and the other thread.

Hopefully, things can be improved prior to the next greatly anticipated release.

Perhaps the easiest improvement would be to make MORE.
:D

No MagnaCut Mule for me. :(

After ~ 20+ minutes of effort, I had managed to place 2 MagnaCut Mules plus other merchandise in the shopping cart and made it all the way past the payment screen. After 6-8 sequential "rejections"/crashes of payment attempts and another 20+ minutes of invested time, I gave up and cacelled the order.

Hi Sgt.

Thanx, I've been watching all of the threads. The whole Mule Team project was my "brainchild", so input is important. Every "solution" has its drawbacks. We'll be working on it.

Originally, the market for this "project" was fairly small and the 300 or so folks participating were pretty consistent. Now we've got large demand swings to deal with. Magnacut was given a significant amount of attention before we made them. I thought that 2,000 should e enough, but I guess not. But the next steel offering will not likely be as popular. And we're guessing now for a market 2 years from now.

I'm checking HRC.

Hi DrBuzzKill,

Sorry for your disappointment. We're trying hard to meet demand so everyone that wants one can get one, and we're trying to discourage people reselling them for profit, but it is a challenging moving target to hit.

I don't know the answer, my guess is 62 on the hardness

Seems to be the average I've been seeing so far

I didn’t score one but I don’t mind. I have a few MagnaCut blades already and a Mule would have been icing. I’ll likely pick one up secondary, hopefully with scales and a sheath to save me some legwork. But I’m regards to missing out, I’m fine with it. Part of the fun for me with Spyderco’s limited releases is the excitement of scoring one. I certainly don’t NEED any more knives. I’m excited when I get one, but if I don’t, there are always others.

Actually, the question is a bit more technical but I figured asking for the hardness would be sufficient to answer it.

FWIW, based on Larrin's blog article on his development of MagnaCut, he suggested that a heat treat/temper of 2050/350F would achieve the best balance of toughness and hardness for the steel at about 62 HRC. See:

So I was just curious what Spyderco chose to do in this regard.

45mins, 5 credit card entries, and when I did finally have a response after a crazy amount of refreshes the result was "out of stock" even though I had one in my cart. Will not pay the flipper prices for this one and likely will not try for a Mule again.

Guess I'm glad I didn't try, thought about it but I have a couple mules that never made it out of the box. I don't consider my self as a collector and purchased each with full intentions to use...just never did. Congrats to those who scored and condolences to those who didn't.

Understood.

Actually, I've never previously participated in the "rush" for a new release for any knife but I really wanted to participate in this one to get my hands on a sample of the MagnaCut (which is the reportedly the newest/lastest/greatest of the "super steels") at less than flipper prices.

Not sure exactly why because I never actually USE any of the knives in my collection but, since I bought 2, I may make an exception in this case.

LOL! ;)

Won't say that I'll "never" participate in the chaos to buy a new release again (anything's possible) but there are already over 340 knives of all kinds (including 150 Spydercos) in my collection.

So, I really don't need another knife of any kind and certainly don't need to suffer the same kind of frustration again as you and I did trying to buy this one.

Now you know what it's like to try to score tickets for Tomorrowland in Belgium. 360.000 tickets sell out in 5 to 10 minutes....
