Magnamax Official Release Announcement

Tougher than S35VN, while retaining an edge nearly as well as S110V. I'd say that is quite an accomplishment.

It won't move MagnaCut or my favorite tool steels out of my pocket, but it will certainly receive consideration for future purchases.

I think it's going to eliminate the need for lots of steel. I hope we get tons of it at very thin sizes.

Different data points from Larrin of a variety of steels

Where would this fit?
(Guessing, Toughness 6, Edge retention 8.5) ?

Crap..... It was brought to my attention I mixed up my Magna Cut data points.....
Should be 7 for toughness, and 5 for edge retention.... Makes sense. I was looking at it and thinking Wow....I didn't realize it was so close...haha.

Thank you for the one who corrected me!

Erasteel seems to be getting better results on Magnacut than Crucible used to, according to the chart above.

On the last chart I also see "New 3V". I suppose this is 3V made by Erasteel?

I see Magnamax hardness is at 61-62. Where would it land if at 63-64?

I would love to see a table with Magnamax's Toughness, Edge Retention, and Corrosion Resistance listed in numerical values.

Probably around where 10V is.

At 62 Rc
MagnaMax gets 710 TCC for edge retention
10 V gets 745 TCC

At 65 Rc
MagnaMax gets 765 TCC..
10V gets 780 TCC

Toughness at 62 Rc is
10 ft/lbs for MagnaMax
8 ft/lbs for 10V
10 ft/lbs for K390

Larrin doesn't have toughness at 65 Rc for MadMax

I am wanting to see a Table. Not a chart. Not TCC, Not Toughness in ft/lbs.

As in:

Toughness. Edge Retention. Cor. Resistance

5. 8. 8

Just like the tables that were published in his "I tested 48 knife steels." Article.

My dollar bet is
6, 8.5, 9
*Edit to add..... Hoping.

If your values hold up, that would be truly astonishing! Added together, your numbers equal 23.5. Magnacut is 21.5, if I remember correctly. I've have not seen anything over 21.5 yet.

I'll take 5.8.8. All day long.
