Magnamax Official Release Announcement

20 years ago Larrin was just like you guys sharing on the forum and now he's climbed to the highest level making all the steels we could never even dreamed of.

This is a really cool moment.

MagnaMax, despite the name and the numbers will improve the cutting experience for the end user regardless of if they know the stats or not.

Yes, it will be more effort to grind for the knife makers than 1095 but in 200 years imagine the wonder when people stumble upon a blade that says "MagnaMax" on it and it has no tarnish, still sharp and keeps cutting. That's an extraordinary thing to be apart of.

We are currently living in the best timeline.

I'm just a little sad the first heat of Magnamax has higher than specified Carbon amount, making it (imho) less desirable.

Larrin Larrin has talked about this on his website knife steel nerds, I hope they label it correctly or provide discounts etc ;)

thanks again

Maybe you are thinking of the second crucible heat that was used in the Spyderco mule knives. That material is long gone.

Working hardness was significantly higher though.

Just didn't have the extreme corrosion resistance.

I was a fan of it.

Tamir Astrachan purchased this custom knife from me a year ago.

The First Edge:

"The first edge you put on it I used for just about anything at work like plastic irrigation hoses, cords, zip ties, and other nasty stuff. Plus a hog and a calf I've processed. I tried to see when the working edge will tire on me, and it took me a WHILE 🥵"

The Second Edge (User Sharpened):

"The second edge was sharpened freehand by myself on the 400, 3K Super vitrified stones, followed by 1 and 0.1 diamond spray by Stroppystuff tried to maintain the original 14 DPS. It came so so wicked! The whole progression didn't last more than 10 minutes max, thanks to the laser geometry :)

This time I wanted to use the knife until the working edge was not usable anymore. I gave up after about 5-6 months... 😂 It just went on and on and on, but at some point I decided to bring it back to life a little more."

The Third Edge (The True Test):

"The third edge I sharpened using the Tsprof K03, using the Dr Marc diamond stones, adjusted to 14 DPS. The progression was (in microns): 150, 80, 20, 5, 0.1. No strop.
It came out insanely biting and lasering through just about anything. Well lucky me, a week into this edge there was a boar hunting in a close by corn field, so I took the opportunity to use the knife as intended.
These are big animals with thick skin, hard and rigid fur and are usually covered in mud and dirt—a nightmare for any edge. I did 11 hogs with that edge, and it was still cutting 🤯🤯🤯"

The Verdict:

"I have no doubt geometry and heat treat played a big part here, but I was amazed by the ability of this steel to support such a THIN geometry, while still being at a high hardness and stainlessness. I've encountered bones, dirt, and grime with very minimal edge damage. You've truly made a wonderful tool 🔥"

Used a slightly worn vsm 50 grit belt and a worn cubitron 726a 220 grit belt and they worked well!
