meaning of a mirror edge

I have a question. How do you guys do this without damaging the finish on the knives is the mirrored bevel particularly steep?

This thread pushed me over the edge (forgive the pun). I need to find a pro and send out my Sebenza for this service when I get back from holiday travels.

Can I play?
I decided to really challenge myself and put a true mirror edge on my custom hawk in 5160 from Coal Creek Forge. I mirror my EDC folders but have not been able to get a perfect edge (hair splitting, not just shaving) from any of my hawks before this one. I'm trying to get the macro on my video camera to get a hair being split with the hawk because I have never seen it done but am having trouble with the focus. I don't want to just throw up a pic because there is no way to prove it was done with the hawk. I'll try to get the vid finished soon and get it posted but for now here it the edge.

I think a mirrored edge really looks nice, but doesn't it get all marred once you use the blade a few times?

A little bit but Ive used mine quite allot and it still has somewhat of a mirror edge to it. It will fade though over time with heavy use.

I touch up mine every other day or so on my 1 micron strop and it keeps a nice mirror. Helps to keep the hair whittling sharpness also.

See my above post:

I GOT IT ON VIDEO!
I borrowed a video camera that has a great macro.
I'll be home in two hours and will upload it then!!!

I love mirror finishes so much I couldn't stop with just the edge:

Nor could I stop with just knives:

Careful with laying that sword on your copy of K.A. Things might shift and the weight of the blade would divide it in half. That would leave us with a serious case of irony.

Awesome edges everyone. I'll need to find the wife's camera and join the club.

noctis do'nt know how you did it but that's increadible. the sword is like the ancient japanese legends---guys head fell & he kept walking, did'nt know he had been cut.

As a knifemaker, I never knew people liked mirror finishes so much. In the maker world, as a general rule, mirror finishes are avoided; both because they are a lot of added work; because they mar so easily; and because there is a perception there isn't a big market for them. It seems, though, that perception could be wrong?

As a non-knifemaker I keep hearing how mirror polished blades are gaudy and ugly, etc, etc. But while styles and fads come and go, those images of just the primary bevel being mirror polished come off as very...awesome. A maker could have fun with that- one grind mirror polished with the other matte, coated black, hand rubbed...

I will say I'm surprised I don't see more knives coming out with that sort of style.

md25v that's simply increadible. it's beyond my capabilities & i wonder if our forum guys were the 1st in the world to accomplish this feat. of course the russians probably beat us to it. thanks for all the effort it was simply amazing.

Thanks Dennis, that means a lot coming from you. I actually wondered if it had been done before as well. I searched youtube and used my best google-fu but I can't find anything like this online with a hawk or even a hatchet. I owe 100% of my current sharpening ability to bladeforum. I could always get my knives and hawks/hatchets to slice paper and shave arm hair but the truth is I thought that was as sharp as anything could get. It wasn't until I started reading the great tutorials here at BF and invested in better sharpening equipment that I started learning what could really be done. I have this great site to thank for it!
