Message from Ethan Becker

Oh man, its going to be great to have the Beckers back. Love my BK7, and am still wanting a Necker and BK1.

Good luck Ethen, well be here for ya!

I happy that my first post here on BF can be one in support of Mr. Becker. While have have not had the chance yet to own one of his knives I have been wanting one for a long time (namely BK9 & Magnum Camp.)
I spent lots of time reading and researching as to which knife I wanted to replace my Ontario SP5 with (it did me good for a long time its just time to move up to something a little more serious); and then saving up the money to pruchase one. Then with money in hand couldn't find hide-nor-hare of a BK9 anywhere (and had no idea why until about a day or two ago) and had started researching what knife to get (begrudingly) instead. Now with new hope I can put off that search and will be happy to bide my time until this next set of Beckers can come out.

Best of Luck to you Mr. Becker and thank you for your commitment to producing a quality knife.

Cheers
-Ronan

Yeah...and out of 1095. No more 0170-6C.

Some of Ka-Bar's fixed blades are actually made of D2. I'm sure if Becker asks Ka-Bar for 0170-6C, he can get it. But his knives in D2 would be awesome, in my opinion.

Very good news indeed and let me throw in a vote for the Patrol Machete. That sucker is a chopping machine.

Oh yeah, thanks. I forgot that Ka-Bar uses some D2. But, I betcha Ethan doesn't go for D2, because Beckers are first and foremost Woodcraft knives...meaning chopping, carving, and batoning. And, with all the controversy regarding D2 chipping problems.....well, you get the drift.
I, for one, love D2, and have never had a chipping problem with it, ever.
Guess it all depends on the HT and edge geometry.

Hey Everybody.....
I am overwhelmed and oh so glad to see how much enthusiasm you all have for my stuff!!!!
Please remember the contract is not yet completely written yet!!!...There are some things I can predict....no PATROL MACHETE (BK6) for a very long time as there are very few flat grinders with a long enough stroke anywhere. The BK1 BRUTE has in my mind been superseeded by the BK9 COMBAT BOWIE. The nine is a real light sword...it cuts rope and better than the PATROL MACHETE, it has the heft and balance to chop well, and it will do most little stuff well. Add a NECKER (BK11) and you have everything you really need in a wilderness situation. The Fisk designed MAGNUM CAMP was ALWAYS the sleeper in my line BUT it DID NOT SELL. The BK2 CAMPANION and BK3 TACTOOL will be among the first to be produced if only because of the military. PLEASE have patience, I am pedalling as hard as I can !!!

Got to go but wiil be back here later tonite or tomorrow....

All Best..

Patience is quite easily had:). It will be well worth the wait!

Oh and welcome to Bladeforums!:D

Ethan you really shouldnt be surprised at this your line of knives was a huge hit around here. They were the best fixed blades around for a price even the most broke of us could afford and thats what made them the first knife suggested for a serviceman on his way the middle east that and they are bomb proof. You ask me Ka-Bar is a very lucky company to get handed such a much requested product line heck people have already been calling them and asking about time frames and the contract isnt even done yet. I will be one of the great mass of people that will be pre-ordering cause I'm not missing out this time, no way in hell am I missing my next chance at a companion or a tac tool.

thanks for the update mr. becker. the bk-9 sure is a winner !can't wait for the bk11 love to get one.o yea big welcome to the best forum around!

Hey Everybody

Sorry about the interruption....Had to run the dogs before dark...

There seems to be a lot of questions about steel (I am SHOCKED, Shocked I tell you SHOCKED! lol) and I will give you an idea of the preliminary discussions....no stainless on the standard fixed blades except for the BECKER EXTREME versions which will probably again be Crucible's S30V...I really like the stuff but, cheap it certainly is not (as a historical note the first TACTOOLS were produced in 440A so that they could double as DIVTOOLS. I chose 440A because of it's superior mechanical strength over 440C which was pretty cutting edge in those dark ages when I was merely middle aged ).
The carbon steels under consideration for the majority of the Beckers is in the 1095 family. The 0170-6C is of course an extremely close relative of
1095. 0170-6 was the now defunct Sharon Steel designation for their 1095 cutlery steel which was used by a huge number of companies and sold under a vast number of catchy trade names.....really good stuff wether it came from the old Western plant or from Camillus or somebody else. Heat it right and it is about as good as it gets.

While we are on the subject of steels.......in the carbons there are so many
really good cutlery steels it really is hard to pick 'THE BEST". 1095 is a really good choice all around and is a most popular steel with a lot of my friends in the ABS.... but there are very good reasons that Chris Reeve chooses A2 for his big hollow handles... the stuff is mechanically strong and when cooked properly, and Chis is VERY picky, it is extraordinarily agressive in the cut. Bob Dozier is with very good reason a big fan of D2 for very simiar reasons. When I started BK&T I used 4140 chrome moly (they make the skins of M1 tanks and gunbarrels out of it and I used to make hammer heads out of it for driving pitons) and at 55 Rockwell with a good cook it WILL shave hair and it is Verrry tough. Whatever steel we use, I assure you, if you liked the Camillus made BECKERS you will like the new ones...BECKERS most assuredly will continue to" WORK for A Living!!"

All Best...

ethan

O.K., Here we go.....four possible steels that Ethan is going to use. (maybe) :D
1. 1095
2. A2
3. D2
4. 4140
- Any bets ?

Hey Troop...

Guess which model I am thinking of using 5160 on?

All Best...
ethan
Knee jerk response would be BK1. But, you hinted that that model was not currently on the table. Hmmmm.....then it's got to be the BK3. (?) 5160 = great "chopper".

Welcome back, Ethan!! We're glad to have you back in the mix! The BK9 was a great, versatile blade that really fit the grip size. I, too, am hoping for a return of the Magnum Camp - I hate to hear it didn't sell that well. I know several people who keep searching for them. All of my experience with A2 in chopper have been very positive.

Here's to wishing you well and looking forward to any new designs as they arrive. Sorry things went the way they did with camillus. As I guess you're aware, their QC got pretty shoddy toward the end. It has got to be frustrating watching that happen to your namesake.

Keep up the hard fight, Ethan. You've got a lot of friends and fans at BFC.\, myself included.
