Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

Been meaning to post a few so here goes...

A pair of Buck Mayo Kaala knives that I put handles on, Desert ironwood and Madrone Burl.
In their as made state these are skeleton neck knives.

The Ironwood is my wife's and I get to use the Madrone handled one...

^^ to this ^^

Very fun project that one was...

Here's something you are not likely to see very often...

Donor knife is the top one, bottom knife is a typical Buck 112. This one needed some tricky grinding of the spring holder and kick to get the blade to work in the 112 frame. This was a challenging and fun project, and the knife has since been gifted to my friend who put the idea of this into my head.

^^ I took the pieces parts from a disassembled Buck 112 and some LEXAN sheet material and made this one on a Sunday for some pictures, it's still holding up fine and is fun to carry occasionally...

^^^ Fun with wood, took off the brass bolsters and stripped the handles, added Desert Ironwood and Mesquite with Blackwood and Osage orange spacers.

Someone's caught the knife modding bug...there's no hope for you now.

Those fixed blades are amazing, especially the Buck in Ironwood. Wow!

forgive my confusion, but what did you say the material was on the main portion of the handle? I thought the majority of bucks were the resin-impregnated dymondwood type material. Is that solid wood?? Either way, it looks great.

It was, originally, I stripped it down to a bare blade and added what you now see...

Here is a recent exploit...a Kauhavan Puukkopaja. The handle was extremely thick on this one, the seller even mentioned it in his ad that it was so thick he couldn't even use the knife...

He wasn't kidding, but I got this one pretty inexpensively so I went to town on this piece of curly birch. I wanted a fixed blade with a full handle and short blade for EDC'ing anyways...after re shaping the handle I stained it with some oil stain I had, wasn't quite satisfied with the white areas...curly birch doesn't seem to like to soak up stain...I broke open a ball point pen and liquefied the ink with WD40...this gave a purplish hue. this has two coats of Danish oil already, and will probably get two or three more coats over the coming weeks.

I probably took about half the wood off of the handle to get this thing molded to my hand...

definitely not for everyone, but I like it, and that's all that really maters to me :)

That looks great, Duane! I love the unique idea for the dye on the handle.

That's a real looker!

This is nowhere in the ballpark of the fine work above, but I removed the opener layer from this old Wenger. My first attempt at a SAK mod... probably peened the the blade just a little too tight. I think it'll work out eventually.

Thanks Barry, Glenn and Walt!
Walt, you did a cool mod on that SAK, I have yet to be successful with multi layer folders...

I will post the family pic of them Soon.

Thanks! Much appreciated, especially coming from you :) This only worked because I removed a whole layer. There's no way I'd be able to start switching things around. In a perfect world, I'd swap the awl for the corkscrew, but the sizes didn't match and I feared crossing the Rubicon.

There's an ugly 110 hanging around here that is begging to be melted like the ones you've done, but I'm scared to start working on it for fear of ending up with a pile of parts. I don't want to derail this thread, so maybe I should message you for advice...

There is a LOT more to those than meets the eye...feel free to email me for advice, I DO NOT however, take on any work.
I have heard of a few knives that wound up useless from failed, incomplete attempts...

I made the Khuk and tother was a very old german carving knife that i butchered..the ring is for a pigs snout and its 14 inch blade..it is very thin in profile and will split a chicken lengthwise with little pressure..I made a wood pinned wooden sheath for it out of an old railway sleeper, its a nice fit.
