Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

It looks fantastic. :cool::thumbsup:
I carried that knife solely for a week during Mike's Challenge GAW. The one thing I noted was that I didn't like the blade shape and wished the point was lower to aid in piercing tasks. Your modification should make it a much improved "user" and I can't wait to try it out. Perhaps I'll do another week's challenge in the totin' thread and report on how it has changed. I'm very excited and appreciate you doing it for me. :cool::thumbsup:

Well I'm glad it is a user. That one mistake is killing me. All the same, it's sharpened now using Murray Carter's method (hence the hamon-like finish on the flats). It's sharp.

Can anyone speak to how delrin responds to belt sanding? I’d like to try working on some case sodbusters and maybe a GEC 23 because they’re still available in delrin. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

JTB_5 JTB_5 I have no idea? I do have a few sets I'm pulling off 71's for recover that I can send you to practice on if you want? I can send them with your pen blade and spring that I've been super neglectful about sending home. :oops:

It is easy to burn/melt it, so go easy. It buffs great, so will smooth out sanding scratches. Depending on how much you are sanding, you are almost better doing it by hand.

You can keep that pen and spring for your coping blade project if you like. I'm not even close to delving into the disassembly/reassembly side of things yet. I'll definitely take the delrin covers to practice on if you don't have plans for them.

Thanks for the tip. I'll take it nice and slow if I use the sander. I think you may have told me this before, but if I don't have a power tool for buffing, what is an analogue alternative I could use by hand?

Also, when you guys do hand rubbing on the blade, do you mount the paper on a block of wood or do you put a layer of cushion under it, or just use your fingers behind the paper (or something else)?

I recently finished up this blade delete and rehandle on a Klein tl29. I think it is my best work yet. The blade is centered, tight liners, pins came out nice, and I’m getting better at shaping the scales.

The frustrating thing is that I was feeling good about this one so I tried to finish up my first Birdseye pivot that I started quite a while ago. After trying to pin the pivot twice I couldn’t get it to stay tight. It had a couple other issues also, so I ended up scrapping it. Oh well, keep practicing and learning I guess.

You guys inspired me to mod my 71 Bullnose in orange.... It's just been sitting on the table by my recliner pretty much since I got it... along with 3 or 4 other random knives. I just don't really like the blade shape for general use. It has too much "belly" for my taste. It always felt sort of "angular" as well, with almost sharp corners at the tang end, and at the "upswept" butt end. I was thinking of a spear point, like you guys have done, but I ended up with more of a drop point. I got rid of the belly, and did a gentle rounding of all my perceived "problem" areas. I tried to not go overboard... and I still need to smooth up the delrin a little bit, but here are the results.
It's amazing how just knocking back sharp corners can completely transform the feel of a knife. This one feels just great now.... and it is arm-hair shaving sharp....

That looks awesome and much more usable... Nice work! :cool::thumbsup:

I finished up a modification on a Cannon rope knife this evening. I did one as a lambsfoot awhile back, and thought I'd try a spear this time. I'm not sure what I think about it yet, but it is a sharp spear point now, that much I can say. :D

That lambfoot looks amazing.. Looks like it came from the factory that way. Is it difficult to open with no nail nick? I have a couple of Otter Messers like that, and they definitely would be tough to pinch open.

Thanks!

It is a bit tough to open. I started on an EO notch, but all I had to work with was very small files, so I didn't get very far. I can pinch it, but if my fingers were slick it would be tough. An EO notch would definitely be a good addition.

 - those are lovely, did the Barlow start out as a standard 15 Boys Knife? Here is my TC Beerlow, converted from a 2016 TC by Jordan...my other Beerlow (above a post or two) was done by Glenn starting with a 2016 Crown Lifter. I love my TC Barlows and I love my Beer Scouts/Radio Knives/Crown Lifters … the Beerlows represent he best of both worlds!!
