Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

Thank you sir, I always shoot for leaving things a little better than I found them, and think I hit the mark occasionally. I think yours is the next one that I’ll be doing. The rat tail bolsters should be no problem either.
Here‘s a few before pictures and an after that matches. The back springs on several of not all were warped slightly so sanding them down and some extra care in peining them back together tightened up some of the gaps with the liners. I think they’ll turn out pretty good.

Thank you, it’s good to be far enough along with some to have something to post.

Not to jinx anything but it shouldn’t really be a problem. It should just be a matter of making sure everything is nice, flat, and smooth and then putting it back together carefully and correctly making sure the blade well doesn’t collapse on itself while piening the pins.

Not a big modification, but I dyed the scales of my 92 black yesterday. They were od green before. It may need some touch ups, but it came out pretty nice. We’ll see how long it lasts.

Not exactly a modification, but some clean up. I bought this little Thiers knife on the big auction site for a really good price, recognizing from the pictures that it had been treated roughly. I sanded the handles and bolsters with 600 grit paper, then I took a belt sander to the blade to get the deep scratches out, and finished the flats and edge on my water stones. The results are modest, but a big improvement over what it was. I could probably go back over the bolsters and scales with a lower grit and work back up and make it look brand new. The blade doesn't need to look uniform, as I prefer the damascus-like oddities I get from using the stones. The lighting in the pictures is natural vs. indoors, so that makes the comparison a bit off, too.

Nice job, some maniac's really been practising their sharpening 'skills' on that one :D And why? those knives are distal taper and take a very fine edge with little effort as they are sent out deadly sharp in the first place:rolleyes:

For bolsters, you can try a loaded strop, it will polish them and or get off any knocks or unpleasant scratches. On knives I like polished bolster(s) spring and matte blades if stainless.

Thanks, Will

Thanks, Will. I don’t know what the original owner thought but it was a mess. I may try your suggestion on the bolster. I like a good polish, too.

I worked on my first GEC modification today, using my table-top sander (80 grit and 120 grit belts), some 400 grit sandpaper, and sharpening stones. I took a user 71 Bullnose (in O1 tool steel!) that a generous board member sold to me at a good price. It is pretty amazing what one can do with just a couple of tools and some patience. Here are the before pictures:
