Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

Really nice P A R K E Barlow, Dan . . . kinda what a custom is all about! Good for you and Evan, both.

How does one break a back spring on a pocket knife..?

I can understand tips, scales etc.. but the spring!?

Nice Dan! Evan does great work. Really excited to see him doing sawcut bone and stamped bolsters! I was waiting for that development in particular. exciting.

Dang, Lemmy, that's great! Excellent work!

Thanks Dan! Its the bone! That stuff really is something. It figures there'd be something super toxic about that dye and they'd have to stop using it. I wonder what Charlie had GEC use on his Red Soups?

There has really been some great looking work shown lately. Modding can be more addictive than collecting, IMO.

I would like to make a suggestion though. I think it is important to mark your work in some way, so that it can be known that the knife has been altered. I know that most of you are doing these for your own use, but somewhere down the line, they might make their way to someone else. It would be bad if someone bought or traded for a modded knife thinking it was original.

I don't have a professional stamp or anything, I just stamp my initials and the year inside the liner. A quick inspection can reveal that marking, and it doesn't take away from the knife.

With the quality of the mods being shown, it's not a stretch to think that they could be mistaken for the real thing.

Thanks for sharing all your great work with everyone!

Not sure how it happened. From looking at it closely, it appears to have just been a flaw in the steel. Started with a crack and one day there was just no "spring" in the spring, and the blades were left to flop back and forth. It was my dads when it happened, so I don't know exactly what the circumstances were, but I do know that he took good care of his knives and taught me the same, so I doubt it was any sort of neglect.

I know I could have sent it back to Case, but their disclaimer says that if it's too difficult to fix, they will simply replace it. I didn't want to chance it. These days, who knows what falls under the "too difficult" umbrella. They also state that if it has sentimental value they will try to fix it. It is still a bit vague and I would just rather keep it, than send it in from Australia, risk getting a new one instead, or worse risk it getting lost in the mail or confiscated at customs (it does happen!).

Thanks! Yeah, It turned out real nice. Perfect size, too. I think it would have been a popular model if they had offered something like it. Never cared for the toothpick shape, the trappers seem a little too big, and their squared corners are kind of a put off. This one is so smooth and sleek, but still has a solid feel and fills the hand just right. I think I may have stumbled on to something!

This is a German made Barlow that had a broken pen blade. These are WIP pic's and the final picture will be posted by Paul Hilborn when it arrives in ND this week. The handles are Ebony.

Here is a Camillus TL29 I just finished modding today. I added end cap bolsters and buffalo horn scales. I also re ground the utility blade into a Wharncliffe. It started out a rusty mess, but is now a slightly scarred and majestic companion.
