Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

Shipwright...I cant say enough to sum up how that knife turned out...speechless.

Birdvis is cranking out some beaut's lately!!! Im still over here trying to get one to look and function the way I want it. Im getting close!

Matt

Keep it up Matt! You've got some good ideas and you're braver than I am with those clip blade mods.

Im waiting on another donor to come in that SHOULD have the right blade, then Im gonna cross my fingers and do my best to get it right. Then I can move on to putting together some others that Ive got my hands on recently!

Till then I keep checking this thread for motivation and inspiration!

Matt

I really like what you've done with it. Can anyone fill me in on the purpose of the 'razor' blade shape? I've never really liked it. It looks like something you'd see in a prison knife to avoid the knife being used to stab, if you can wrap your head around that.

I think I read somewhere in one of the history books that the idea came about after the civil war. A lot of men lost arms during that time and the need to have and use a knife daily existed back in those days. The notch was cut in the end to allow it to be opened with one hand (arm) by hooking it onto a pant leg or table as described. I may be wrong but that's what I remember.

That makes total sense, thanks!

Nice Rachel. Your scrimshaw work looks professional.

To any one on here who wants two torn down Camillus electricians knives, let me know and I will ship them to you on my next trip the the Post Office.

I would love them, but I'm afraid I couldn't do them any justice. Some of the work on here lately has been phenomenal! Very generous of you, sir!

DANG! I am in need of two TL-29 main blades for some knives Im working on with my buddy's little boy. I have handle scales and liners all lined up but no blades lol, snooze you lose!

Matt

First folder modification for me. Colonial Barlow that came to me with broken scale and loose blades, and the main blade was bent at the tip. This is my first attempt, and I'm not finished with it yet. I plan on making my own pin spinners and addressing the peened pins. I made new brass liners and brass bolsters, then added black spacer to bring the green jigged bone up to the height of the brass bolsters. I carefully bent the tip of the blade as straight as I could get it, and had to deal with a slight twist, but I think I've got it. I left some of the patina on the blades to pay homage to their former life. It's a heavy knife, but very strong. I still have some handwork/finish work to get done, and I likely will have that done later in the week, if all goes well.

Like I said, this was my first attempt, so be gentle. I highly doubt it will be my last.

Lookin' good Stringplucker! Beautiful color choices! Can't wait to see the end result as well as further info on your pin spinner. Keep us undated if possible Sir.

Thanks. I saw pictures of the scales and the possibilities began pouring in, so I bought them. I had them for a few months before finally doing something with them. Brass seemed to be the only option from the beginning. I held them against polished nickel silver, and it didn't grab me like it did against patina'd or polished brass. I didn't know which direction to go with the spacer material color options, so I opted for black...a safe option.

Thank you.

The pin spinner is going to be a bit of a challenge. I know what it needs to look like, as well as what I need to do to make it...but my shop is limited in machines, so making them will take some creativity. I don't have a lathe, but I have a few drill presses. I'll likely put a center drill in a vise, swing an indicator with the drill chuck and bump it around til it's nearly perfect and clamp the vice down, then put a piece of O1 in the drill chuck and spot it...everything I'd do on a lathe, but vertically as opposed to horizontally. Once that's done, and the tip is profiled, I'll split it with a dremel and a cut-off wheel and heat treat with a torch. A challenge...not impossible.

Between the arthritis in my hands and the pain in my shoulder, I had to stop work before I was done today. I'll finish it in time, but for now, I'll carry it as is and come up with additions things to do before I call it done.

Here's a few more views of the work that birdvis does. Beautiful!

I'm glad I got these two and hope I can get some more in the future.

I'm thinking of tapping him to build me a couple customs.
