Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

This also brings up a question of membership status for me. At what point should someone spring for the craftsman/service provider membership. I did this knife and someone else is sending me one to work on as well I have no idea if there would be more or not. So I guess my question would be how many before someone should pay for the upgrade.

Nice work on the mod! IMO, if you are benefiting by doing work for others, you should support the forum in the same manner.

I'm wrestling with the same question. My membership is up for renewal in a week, and I'm thinking about upgrading to "Craftsman" just because I have a vague idea that I could scrimshaw some Rough Rider knives over the summer and sell them on the exchange for a little extra knife budget money. I really don't want the stress of working on other people's knives (I have enough stress and deadlines in life, I don't want to add that to my hobby) and I might never actually sell anything...on the other hand, Craftsman is only $15 more than Platinum.

It seems to be possible to pro-rate your platinum membership to your new craftsman membership when you decide to upgrade later this year by contacting Spark. At least, that's what I gleaned from a few topics from members that had a similar wish by searching the forum for "upgrade membership".

Awesome! Elk right?
Hello , it's in stag .

You wouldn't have to scrimshandle many to make $15.
But if you don't want the stress, why do it?
I just mean it would be stressful to have people place orders and send me their knives to be scrimshawed. If I buy some knives myself, and scrim them at my own pace when I'm in the mood, then I could sell them as a "craftsman".

Thanks, that is an option. I figured I'd do some scrimming over the summer, when it's too hot to play outside. :)

I agree with you, Rachel. Spec knives would be a lot less stressful than custom orders.
I plan to start making saddles again, but I will only do spec saddles. If the saddle sells, then I will sink the profits into making another one... and so on.

Gotcha. Good thinking.

I still don't feel my work is good enough to charge money for, but people like it I guess. That said, I try to keep my pricing low so it's a good value. If you feel weird about charging for it, do trades to start out with, or just charge a small amount.

However, i like you work alot, and may have to commission something from you!

First of all, your work is fantastic. Second, thank you for the compliment. I'll practice some more this summer, maybe do some trading, and see how things go. I like the idea of seeing my work show up in other folk's pictures in the "toting" thread.:thumbsup:

Removed the mud handles, re ground the blade, (it had numerous hollows, the full flat grind wasn't very flat), etched in ferric chloride and then a new handle with walnut from Home Depot, (no, really). Made a sheath too:

Got ahold of this camp knife and repaired the chipped handle but it never sat well with me knowing it was broken and I’m not a fan of bails either, I’m always concerned the blade will hit it when closing and damage the blade so I rarely carried it despite loving the blade configuration. So I recovered the handle with some African Blackwood, got rid of the bail and now it’s in my pocket.
