Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

I too shall play this game...

The head was stripped and etched in white vinegar, and I added some decorative woodburning at the crown. Ubiquitous paracord wrap for overstrike protection.

The haft was stripped, sanded, and finished in tung oil. I also burned a 4-Directions/Solar symbol on the left side of the haft.

To round it out, I added some paracord at the base to provide a reference point/stop for my hand so that I naturally grip it at the intersection of the first and second thirds, as vector001 promotes. I must agree that this is the optimal point of balance between power and speed. The wrap terminates in an adjustable lanyard loop with stopknot, so the lanyard won't pinch or cut off circulation to my hand.

glad to see ya mention the "third hold", brother tycho'.

the ballast effect that that hold takes advantage of really makes a hawk a different animal than a fine hatchet or an axe.

folks that use their hawks in an axe hold, at the end of the handle, can't figure out what's so great about the tomahawks usually - it's interesting to see them when they "get it"...!

then ya got a hawk fanatic.

wait until you try it on a proper long hawk.

BTW that's a great lookin' hawk! - it's got heart.

Here's my work in progress. I wanted to share a trick that I used. I sanded and tapered the handle some although it doesn't show very well. I didn't have any stain so after burning the handle I made some very strong hot coffee with instant coffee and sort of basted the handle with a BBQ brush. Then I soaked it with mineral oil. I really like the way the color turned out. Cheap and easy and gives it a good color. This one has a short handle like the original post. About 14.5".

Oooh, tiger stripe would be excellent, vec! I want one of your hawks but you keep making them better and better!

That and I don't really NEED more pointy steel, but since when did that stop any of us?

Trail Hawks Mods are a new form of Crack, i've decided.

:D:thumbup:

here's a little mind-candy for your modders - a work in progress.

old warriors are as important as young ones in our book, and my Isnag Mentor just demanded a hawk to take back to the jungle with him, and we wanted to try a new skin style -

...it was a great opportunity to also honor our Viet Nam veterans, while experimenting with a new skin - the "Resin Wrap" i am calling it for now, so folks know what the heck i am talking about:

this hawk isn't done yet by a long shot, but i thought some might get a little kick out of it so far:

when it is done, we'll have a clear matte finish on it for zero shine (it's about that way now, off camera), ...maybe paint the head to match the Original Tiger Stripe handle finish, ...and a few other things to sharpen up the look of it.

if feels really good in the hand so far - slightly sandy and grippy, but very durable feeling.

i need to get a VN Vet Investor to torture test it.

i beg to differ, sir!

that is very utilitarian, in deep forest or sandy desert or ocean.

spikes can be very useful over hatchet bits, in survival walkabouts.

they dig well.

a spike hawk is my ultralight version of a poll hawk with a chisel along for the ride - i like both ways.

After my 8th grad coming up im gonna have some money so what I'm thinking of doing is...

1. Norse Hawk CS
2.Remove Paint from head
3.Sand, Stain haft, (Thinking maybe a cocobolo color?)
4.Some time of paint/stain for the axe head (Something traditional like a nice silver polish color)
5.Leather rope (Native American style)
6. Brass pins & Tacks.

I'm going for a more traditional looking thawk. I'm going to try my best I'm only in 8th grade :P
