That's a cool lookin hawk in Pyre's first and only post. Besides, anyone who says "suede thong" and "dangly bits" in the same posting is OK in my book. Also like the quiver.

Hey! Thanks for the comps :D It was a lot of fun working on it. I've got plans to make another one with wood carvings in the haft, possibly with a celtic theme. I'M HOOKED!

"thongs" and "dangly bits" are correct terminology, right??

I'm not touching this one here. This is a family forum. Perhaps in W&C. I would like to see the Celtic hawk when you're finished though.

You guys just made me buy 4 CS Hawks, - Trail, Norse, Rifleman, and Frontier.

Can't wait to put your useful ideas into some mods.

Thanks!

For all the guys having trouble removing the factory finish- I soaked mine in "Klean-Strip Strip-x Stripper" over night. I then took it out an ran water over it. All of the finish peeled right off with very minimal brushing with an old tooth brush.

I'm pretty sure I got the stripper at Wal-Mart, and it was a lot cheaper than the last stripper I bought...

Well after checking this fantastic thread and seeing so many cool thawks, I had to do one of these myself. First I took it apart and cleaned up the wood and blade interface. I stripped the paint off the blade in gasoline, then acid etched it overnight in pure lemon juice. I matte clearcoated it to keep rust from growing. I spent hours filing down the wood grooves from giving me splinters and then applied several coats of shoe polish and wood wax. It was OK, but kinda plain.

So I ended up covering it all. I didn't want to have too many holes in the handle so I settled for one hole at the bottom and a very long piece of paracord to cover the handle and make the dongle. I ran the cord over the blade to cover up that ugly threaded hole.

I'll rarely ever use this thing, but I'm glad Cold Steel makes these things so inexpensive since I want to get a bunch more just to try other themes. I think I may get a War Hammer for my next project.

I think CS personel might have read this thread. I was actually kind of disappointed (maybe not). After reading about so many people getting thier hawks with loose heads, and bad fits I was eagerly awaiting my eyesore to rebuild it my own. I got two hawks with heads set firmly on the haft with NO visible gap or loose spots, and set screw tightened. New haeks made in Taiwan. Not too bad for less than 30 bucks, my hawks were usable out of the box, but i will still make them mine :D pics later i guess.

I bought mine before knowing about this thread...What inspiration! I dont even know where to start.

P.S. about the scew in the head. When I first got the hawk I considered removing the screw completely...Dont most hawks fit by being jammed to the top anyway? -without a screw fastener?
