Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

I sanded both of my hafts and burned them yesterday. Sanded again lightly and put a coat of tung oil on. Let it dry then fine steel wool to buff with. Today another coat of tung oil.

Sharpened the Trailhawks and put them on the hafts. I haven't yet tried to throw them but I will soon. I really like the way the Rifleman's Hawk throws so I'm hoping the Trailhawks throw as well.

did ya de-burr the inside of the eye?

that can be helpful to minimize handle breaks.

I just recieved my norse hawk and i was wondering how long it takes for the head to set into the haft and quit moving every time i hit a piece of wood. i removed the bolt so to not break the haft while throwing.

I appreciate that vector001. I threw my Trail Hawks this afternoon. I did alright except
I have to remember they are lighter than my Rifleman's Hawk. My heads on the Trail Hawks set real good after I worked on the haft (sanding, sanding , tung oiling, etc.) I did the same on my Rifleman's Hawk and it has stayed put on the haft. Good luck to you .

All right guys, you all talked me into buying a trailhawk ( it wasnt that hard). So I finally finished modding it, for now anyways.

I sanded most of the black coating off and let it sit in mustard to give it a nice patina. When I cleaned it off it gave it kind of a goldish color which I thought was weird but I like it. I also gave the haft a blackened treatment of mud and then rubbed black spray piant into it kind of like you would rub stain into wood. Finally I reprofiled the blade and sharpened her up. She cuts like a beast now!!! Anyhow here are a few pics!!

Because of YOU PEOPLE ;) I now have to order some Trail Hawks and get modding.

I'd like to order from someone who actually has these in stock and will deliver shortly after I give them my money but don't want to pay retail or inflated shipping costs. I have already checked into some popular online distributors and discovered ugly reports...after they refused to reply to my email inquiring about actual availability.

I'll pass along an idea I have for a quasi-sheath. How about taking a piece of soft copper tubing, bend it to fit the curve of the blade edge and tie/fasten it to the other side of the head. Easy on and easy off. Might could even put some leather or rubber something or other where the copper meets the blade edge but I wouldn't think it would be of much concern, being much softer than the steel. I'll be working on that concept after I receive my hawks.

I am also looking to fashion some handles out of hedge. (I have access to some hedge that's been curing for over 10 years and also some green hedge) They'll be virtually indestructible.

 NEGATIVE! Burn FIRST...and then soak. If you soak first you will have a FlameStick bro!

Burn first. Then soak.

Boy do I feel dumb... I've used lemon oil on rosewood fretboards for years and never even thought of putting it on a hawk handle. Thanks for the tip

A little update. I thought I'd go ahead and try a little file work on my TH. I tried a vinegar patina as well. I guess I just picked the TH to do all my experimentation on.

If anyone is interested, just making a pattern of alternating crescents is easy as hell. Just set your intervals, start your grooves with a triangle file, then use a round file or a half round file to finish them out. I bought a set of precision files for less than $4.

In retrospect, I think I set my intervals too far apart for this hawk. I think I used 1/4 inch intervals, but 1/8 inch would have been better. I might go back over it and add triangle grooves in between the crescents. How do you think that would look? Too busy?
