I'm wondering about methods for getting lettering or more artistic patterns on the head of a trailhawk. Was thinking about chemical or electrochemical etching options, rather than carving/scratching the steel, but am open to any suggestions.
For colours , why not case-hardening ,as on a gun ?
If I am following you, this would be something like parkerizing? I've loved the look of that on hawks posted here, just not sure how you would get a pattern or lettering that way. Have any specific ideas?
I read of one technique on another forum here, involving covering a blade with packing tape, or wax, or even just waterproof ink. Then removing the coating in the shape you want to remain on the metal. Then you conduct an electrochemical etching, with a solution of salt&vinegar, or acid. The idea being that only the uncovered metal takes on the pattern.
After you case hardened ,then you engrave it or have it engraved.
Can you expand on this please Slow2Run?

The best way is doing an internet search for a case the harden process, how to's and look at case hardened guns/weapons pictures to see if this is what you want, They are two base way, You case harden the metal or pour a chemical on the metal and, this gives it that case-harden look only.
