Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

OK, so I bought it a while back but I got back around to my CS Norse project. I've got a couple 30" CS handles due to be here on 6-15-10.

I stripped the black lacquer off the head and have been patinating it with a mix of H2O2+salt. It's going very well and browning up nicely. After I get a get brown color I''m going to brush it down with the ol' wire brush and apply some mustard to make it a groovy brownish gray color.

The plan is to mount it on one of the 30" handles and cut the handle back to about 25". I have a set of langets which have been rusting out on the back porch for nearly a year. I may or may not use them but there will be some Viking jelling-style artwork on the handle and definitely some runes.

I bet this will make a very fast battle axe

.....there will be some Viking jelling-style artwork on the handle and definitely some runes.

Sounds great! Be sure to post pics.

How do you plan to get the art and runes on the handle? I've just started work on my first 'hawk, a trailhawk, and plan to use a soldering iron to 'pyrograph' some celtic/nordic designs or lettering on the haft. Also thought about carving designs in, with chip carving knives or just exactos.

I just finished brushing off the fine layer of rust powder and what was underneath is a nice dark charcoal gray with a hint of brown. Perfect. I'll leave it as it is.

Lost my hawk before I ever had a chance to post any pics of the mods. We were preparing some riverside blinds for the coming waterfowl season and somehow it ended up falling out of the boat on the way back along with my friend's fishing rod. We retrieved the rod but the hawk is gone for good I'm afraid. 20+ feet down.
Well at least noone will step on it and get cut.
I can see why this thread has gone on so long. The hawk just might be the most useful tool CS has ever sold outside of the Trailmaster.

Could you re post that link about your handle wrap Q? I lost it and don't have the patience to go back threw this thread. thanks

I just gotta say that you guys are the people who pretty much prompted me to get a trail hawk.

Here's my first tomahawk mod. Like I mentioned before, It's a trail hawk (at least originally) :

I don't consider myself anywhere near done with this thing. I'll just add on as I go.

Looks great Kissaki! What did you do to achieve the blade finish?

I sanded the blade with some sort of Dremel attachment and a sanding sponge until the only paint left was the stuff sunken in the crevices and pit marks. Then I submerged the head in a boiling mix of water + Vinegar (50/50) for a couple of minutes. After it was a fairly dark hue, I pulled it out, and used some 1500 grit sandpaper and lightly went over the blade with it, just to make the edges and high points on the texture a bit shinier than the rest of the metal.

Good work Kissaki. I like the hue of the haft stain. How did you manage the leather wrap under the head?
