Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Hi there Plowboy, we're neighbours ;-) at least we're in the same province. Nice first piece of leather work. If you are going more and want some tips i'd be happy to help. You cam email me at songofthewoods@hotmail.com

Robin

nice pics everyone, never got around to order one, will have to order either a spike hawk or and trail hawk now...maybe both!

Plowboy87, I'm in agreement with you on the CS Pipehawk. I also prefer the traditional look of it. I love the Pipe & Hammer Pole hawks of the 1700's. As a side note; I'm almost finished moding my Trailhawk. I went in a completely different direction than the ones I've seen in this thread. Pics coming soon.

How does the modified rifleman feel now? When I cold blued the head on mine, I also squirted clear silicone into the gap between the shaft and head. I can chop 4-8" diameter trees down with it now and the head does not loosen at all, it's dead solid. Thought I'd pass that on.

Like, clear silicone caulk from Home Depot or something?

my first modded hawk I did for a local gun forum give away. I still need to do some file work on the head then assemble it all. the handle is stained "cabernet" and wrapped in OD cord to match the forums colors.

That head is pretty sweet! My wife bought me a hawk for christmas that I've been working on but there's so many different things I want to try do I picked up a second yesterday... My wife calls them rabbit hawks because of how they seem to multiply!

On the first one I stripped and rust blued the head, did an antique oil finish on the handle and have started wrapping the handle and then I'll just need to make a mask for it... On the second one I stripped the head and brought it almost to mirror, charred the handle and then did 10 or so liberal coats if boiled linseed oil to hopefully drive some moisture back in. it will also get some wrapping done to the handle, and I'll post pictures once its done. These are fun!

Here is my Cold Steel Trail Hawk Mod. I decided to go the more traditional route.

This is what I started with.

Here are the mods. I reshaped the hammer and blade. Did some file work, blued the head and stained the haft.

thank you greatly Q and robin,
firstly, Q, id like to congratulate you on an excellent job with your Hawks!

Right, questions :D (numbered for convenience)
1. What finish do you guys think would be best for a low maintenance, simple to do and good looking finish for the head? (please bear in mind i will be creating a set of a hawk a cold steel special forces shovel)

2. would welding the grub screw hole in the side of the CS Trailhawk head affect the edges temper, or is it far away enough for it to not bother it?

3. this one is specifically aimed at Vector, how do you go about making a composite haft?

4. how would i go about doing deep clean etches on the head?

5. would you guys mind giving me a few tips on what to look at?

Thanks in advance,
MoZ

Moz on the etching question read back a few pages and its covered in this thread. I and others have posted details on what we've tried.

Moz I've come up with a new approach to the set screw hole:

I epoxy it in, making sure it doesn't project past the inside of the eye.

Then I use the trusty Dremel to cut in a groovy design, about 2mm or so deep.

After I patinate the head (H2O2 + salt), the set screw & hole aren't noticeable unless one is intentionally looking for them. The cut-in design and patination camoflage it excellently.

I can't post any pics yet because our computer bit the dust and we're using one my wife borrowed from one of her friends until my techie brother finishes rebuilding ours.

yes i was thinking bout the epoxy trick but wasnt too sure, does it withstand vigorous working? i should imagine it does but to be sure. thanks for the info though.

heres another question: would UHMWPE thermoplastic be suitable for a hawk handle?

I don't know yet ;) It should though. It's not in a place where it will experience any serious shock or vibration.
