More #71 with micarta!

So I bought a canvas one before and really liked the look and design, but the handle seemed to move my fingers onto the blade when I squeezed down.

However, I find myself wanting a red one. Have any of you ever not liked a pattern then gave it another chance and liked it?

I'd be curious to know which has the better grip between the micarta and the linen.

Both are micarta, one is canvas and one linen. Just like the respective fabrics, the difference just being the density of the impregnated material. The canvas are made a little differently because they can't use the buffing wheel w/compound on them to put on a spit-shine because the compound gets embedded. So the canvas is left with a little rougher type finish as opposed to a buffed out slick finish. I like the look/feel of a canvas better, but both are heavy duty slabs.

Excellent first choice sir. Any one of the handle choices will be a stunner. Can't wait to get my natty canvas in my hands.

For now, the red linen is the only one likely to see pocket time. The proud pivot pins and lanyard tubes are much more problematic on the canvas knives, where they sit so proud that they would wear a hole in your pocket or scratch up anything they contacted, including your hands. Although I love the look of the canvas knives, they will need some serious modification before they go in my pockets.

I am a Micarta junkie, but the Delrin #71s, with the flush pivot pins and lanyard tubes, are much more practical.

Does anyone have a suggestion for how to file down the pivot pins and lanyard tubes without damaging the Micarta?

Someone had posted about using a concave drummel attachment by hand, just lightly turning it on the pin to take the edge off. I haven't done it yet but the hard edges don't really bother me much.

I think I'll try it. These are not just hard, raised edges. They're sharp!

Just got mine in natural canvas. My lanyard tube and liners are fine, but the pin is certainly a little proud and a little sharp. It doesn't bother me enough to take a drummel to it. I can't imagine having to hold the thing in a position where it would actually hurt. YMMV, though.

I know there's a thread somewhere on the first run of these, and the things folks did to take the edge off the pins. I seem to recall someone had luck just running some pliers around the edge of the pin and and rounding off the burr?

Update: here's the thread, from just last January.

Man these natural canvas ones look great. Mine is supposed to be here today but it appears to be hung up somewhere. Gotta love the postal service. Guess I'll have to wait till Monday.

I'm sort of holding back from ordering one based on the pivot issue. If GEC thought the proud pivot would be an issue with it being sharp, they wouldn't have put them out for sale right?

My suspicion is that it can't be avoided with the canvas micarta (less so with the linen). Something about how the polishing process works. Not sure why. It doesn't seem like an QC issue, if that's what you mean.
