More #71 with micarta!

I'm sort of holding back from ordering one based on the pivot issue. If GEC thought the proud pivot would be an issue with it being sharp, they wouldn't have put them out for sale right?

I really think you're making too big an issue of the pivot pin csisland. They really aren't a hinderence when it comes to using these knives. I did round the pin off using a cupped Drimmel bit on one of my knives. Another method would be to use a small file to file around the edges of the pin. Either way, if you don't get one, you'll be missing out. It wasn't GEC's call to leave these pins proud - it was Mike Latham's. They are his SFOs.

I agree with Modec, it's not that big of an issue, imo. Yes, they are proud and have edge but it's nothing that would keep me from carrying the knife. I actually like running my thumb over them a bit, that's just me though. You are able to soften the edges if you feel the need with the dremmel tool, file or sandpaper.

Is that the case, that Mike asked them to be left proud? I thought GEC'd been asked to take them down further. Maybe I'm misremembering, though.

Either way, I kinda like them proud.

That was the impression that I got was that they were going take the pivot pin down a little.

I'm really liking the red linen version and am thinking of possibly buying one. I already have a green canvas from the 1st run that I haven't even carried yet. Am I crazy for wanting another one? Should I save my money or buy a different knife? Hmm....

Ed, I think there is probably a lot of variation amongst individual knives. Some of the pivot pins are simply too proud/rough/sharp-edged. But I agree, it wouldn't/didn't stop me from buying one of each. But I do plan to take a dremel bit to my canvas micartas. The red linen was better finished, pins less proud, edges smooth.

Another thing to note is the pull factor. All three of mine had a blade pull of 8-9. I plan to oil the joints, and I suspect they won't be so stiff after breaking in.

As others have noted, all 3 came with decent blade sharpness, not a sure thing with GEC. I might not even bother to sharpen them before putting them to work.

I love Micarta, and I love GEC, so a few sharp edges, proud pins, or borderline nail breakers are not going to put me off. :)

Yeah, anybody that would buy more than one of these Bull Nose knives ought to have their head examined.

Just kidding of course.

With my orange Delrin and the three new Micartas, that makes four. Had a new Nifebrite, but gave it to a boy on his 16th birthday. He needed it more than me. Wonder if there are any more left for sale. ;)

They are actually very consistent; I have seen none that come above the slabs. And they are a bit better than the earlier canvas. They factory makes the call because they cannot use the buffing compound on canvas as it collects in the fiber. They learned that lesson back in 2007 with a canvas micarta. Anything else they could use would eat the micarta faster than it would eat the metal.

That has a tendency to happen. Plastic being softer than metal and all. umm... don't ask me the story. I was young and ignorant at the time. Gronk laughed at me.

BTW, Mike...Thanks for making this happen! I love these knives! Please take my obsessive comments with a grain of salt. I hope to acquire more Bullnose Micarta, Delrin, and Nifebrite in the future. They are great users, and even better as gifts to those in need of a great knife.

I think these knives are great. But I would like to comment on the "sharp edges and proud pins". In my experience sharp edges and proud pins will disappear naturally with a few weeks pocket time. Heck, one company produces a whole line of factory made "pocketworn" knives.
And that's a nice "Redneck" Ed! The key to series.

Now that I handle it more I find the inner bolster lining a little on the sharp side.
The pivot pin I can see your point.

My canvas one is from the first run. I found the inside liners to be a little sharp (didn't mind the pivot pin though, I like running my thumb against it) so I took a round ceramic stick (like a Lansky crock stick) and just ran it along the liners with the blade open to knock that edge off. It's very comfortable to me now. Remember, these are about as inexpensive as a new GEC will be so don't be afraid to modify the knife to your liking. Especially if you like the knife and the mods are easy.

The next thing I'd like to see Mike Latham do with these is to bring them out with a liner lock much like the #73s with liner locks. They would cost more but would be well worth it. Even one of them with a lock back like the #72s would be well worth it.

That would be interesting and probably would be a good seller for the right price. I'm hoping to see some natural materials for scales, some ebony wood or smooth bone....man those would be awesome!

This thread has caused me to buy two of these SFO knives, a red linen and a natural canvas. I intend to press the natural canvas into duty as my EDC once it arrives. I am really drawn to the single blade, the great construction, and the micarta covers.

All 3 look great. The pins look like you wouldn't want them any smaller. I just need to decide what one, I like the green but have a habit of laying them down and would need a bright tether on the other hand the tan and red look good also.
