Most over-rated production knife brand?

depending on who you ask , could be every brand and none of the brands.....

Sorry.. I have been rather crabby.

It's not personal and I don't have anything against you, I get you're an Emerson fan and that's cool but generally fans of a brand who constantly defend "their" brand rub me the wrong way.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and going after "nay sayers" is silly to me.

All good, we might all defend our favorite brands a bit much but in the end we are all blade fans.

Its really the same as someone defending their favorite sports team or TV show.....its all in good fun!

Glad there's no hard feelings , and I agree although there is infighting amongst us we are still an "us" as in knife guys.

After we get done with our blade drama were cool again lol

Blade drama... Believe it or not i freaking love bladeforums blade drama included. Ill be clinging to bladeforums till my last breath.

You know, I over-rated a knife one time. I usually don't talk about it but we're all friends here. It was only the one time and I promise I didn't inhale or anything when I did it. And hair didn't grow in my palm afterwards. I was probably lucky. But I don't remember if what I did was "most" over-rated or if it was just sorta over-rated. I really don't want to get into it any more so just forget I brought it up.

Carry on....

I don't follow Jim personally, so I don't know much about him. His videos are quite informative though, in terms of displaying the knife. He ever points out the flaws though (from what I've watched).

I am not able to disprove his statement, and I had read some comments with similar satements. There is no proof though, so who knows except Jim....his videos are suspiciousy positive though, and the point about his Sigil review are suspicious. No one who usually shows blade centering simply forgets to show it in a review, I just don't see that happening with a $1k+ knife

Now I'm confused. First you said his videos were suspicious, now you say you don't really follow him, know him, or watch much of him, but he informative.

I feel that Spyderco is the most overrated production knife brand. The majority of the designs that they manage are produced by other companies, mostly in Asia, but get a "made in USA" price tag slapped on them with the Spyderco label. People eat up that hole in the blade, though, and few seem to mind the lack of warranty work/blade replacement options. I don't get it but to each his own.

I make & sell culinary for the most part and the most overrated brand I come into contact with on a regular basis is Cutco.

Crappy little handle design, 440A steel, Hollow ground when they would last much longer if a FFG, Was too many serrated knives in their lineup, and there are plenty of other brands that are a better buy than them.

There, I trashed an over rated brand. Happy? ;)

I agree but thank goodness many in the general population that fish in the Bay don't feel the way you do when looking over my flea market finds.;):D

You're totally entitled to your opinion and I wouldn't ever try to start an argument with you.

That being said, in my own personal experience, Spydercos out of Taiwan have some of the best fit and finish I've experienced in a knife. That factory is doing some really impressive things IMO!

Very true!

QTRMSTR Knives. They definitely look cool, but for the price, you're not getting that great a quality knife. I purchased a karambit from them (for $200 Which I love and is one of the coolest knives I've ever seen/owned.) But the screw to tighten the knife must've been made from cheap metal because it got stripped so easily it was ridiculous. Also the pocket clip was very easily bent out of shape. Overall the cutlery this company makes is definitely overpriced and overrated.

Hmmm ..., kinda looks like an Instagram pic to me.

This is a great example of how we all can at times see something different, based on each person's personal experiences.

Example: What "I" see is a folding knife that has been thoroughly advertised as a fast opener. I see two obvious features (Wave & thumb-disk) that were designed purpose specific for this reason (as proclaimed by the maker). Both great options for the intent. What I also see is; the best working portion of this edge rendered useless by one of these features (this would hold true for feathersticking, and any other cutting that is deeper than the blades height, especially in any push-cutting requiring controller force). That same thumb-disk really gives fits to me in field-sharpening (something that the designer touts heavily related to the heat treatment results).

To me I don't understand the intent of this picture ..., why post a picture batoning a folder in an urban setting like this? Perhaps, an example of "why not" use a/this knife like this ...?

On the contrary, I wish I owned a "punisher T-shirt", because I think it's a very cool logo.

It is great to see practising using a knife. I will leave you with this thought; doing that, with that knife will quickly lead to excessive lockbar travel which will in turn lead to unsafe lockup. In short time the lock-liner and possibly the stop-pin will need replacement :-(

In no way do I mean any disrespect to the picture or the user, I just believe this is a good example of how people's experiences affect judgements they make.

In my mind there have been very few qualified posts related to the OP in this thread, and I greatly appreciate those because the writer(s) actually took the time to qualify their opinions/statements with first hand experience references.

Hopefully, something here is useful to someone :-)

Regards,

Punisher T-Shirts are the most overrated knife brand. Terrible edge retention.

Opinel and Emerson.
Emerson I agree, for the price reason. Opinel I don't, I've recently been doing some testing of slicing capabilities of my knives, cutting cigarette boxes, and the opinel, unlike my delica, Northfield, Case, Queen, Mora, & Schrade (in various styles) it bites right into it and if I slice and push right can cut clean through in one slice. Never have I used something as good at slicing into or through things.

I think Benchmade is a bit over priced myself on some models, and spyderco has some models I think are too expensive too. Great knives though.

This should be a poll.

I vote GEC.

It's just a rehash of knives made years ago with a manipulatively restrictive delivery channel that encourages flippers to cyber squat on the site, soak up as many knives as they can and then I quote "Catch & Release" them at twice the price and thrice the value.

That should stir folks up.
They are pricey, and I can't stand seeing people buying up multiple versions of the same knife for collections while I'm scrambling to find an ugly handled version to use. The big draw is that they are the cheapest way to get a really nice and brand new traditional knife in a variety of patterns. It's a pain to search for a certain style of slipjoint in good shape because no companies make them now, GEC has taken care of that a bit with more fun and varied handle materials than other traditional companies.

I think their collectability is overrated, they are still in business after all.

QTRMSTR Knives.

To be overrated you have to be ratted. quartermaster is such trash they don't even show up on the radar
