My bk2 broke under the scales!! WTH!

Steve, your comments make total sense to me, but you have to understand that we've all seen Ka-bar go above and beyond on more than one occasion. I suspect the fact that so many of us expected the "right thing" from Ka-bar's perspective to BE going above and beyond is a testament to their amazing customer service, nothing more.

Agreed Ethan. I admire your position. Ultimately knives are tools. Plain and simple. Some just make better tools than others. 😉

I think this comment is worth highlighting. I started another thread and it came out jerkish so I deleted it. Maybe it will play better here. I see this as Ethan / KA-BAR going ABOVE and BEYOND. There were more than a couple of phrases in this thread along the lines of "stand behind the product" "make it right" "do the right thing". The implication being that if they don't give out a new blade they are not doing the right thing. I don't think that 's fair to EB and KA-BAR. I think it's AWESOME that they are going to take care of him. I would never "expect" them to do it in a case like this. No offense JT / OP but it's not like the knife snapped while whittling a tent peg.

And before I get completely flamed, my next purchase will be a Becker from KA-BAR.

True words brother,
I'll be the first to admit that I was HARD using the knife, but as Ethan and others have graciously pointed out, I wasn't being as careful/smart about the capability of the "tool" as maybe someone with a little more "dirt time" with their blades would've been.
This reputation for affordable and high quality knives, the long tradition (from Ka-Bar), and from the little that I heard (mostly vids on YouTube) told me that the Becker line was some of the very best, even including competitors that cost 2-5 times more. On top of that, the online community here on BF and elsewhere is something really special.
Again, if either Ka-Bar, the Beckerheads, or Ethan had said that it wouldn't be replaced or covered, I'd be bummed, mad at myself, and still a fan of my other Beckers.

As I said previously, I don't like the windows in the tang, full tang should be really full. Why call it full tang, when it is windows tang in reality :-).
This is not the first time, when it broke in the thinnest spot. I am remember at least three simmilar cases. They should really considered making a trully full tang versions again I think.
The windows in the handle and increased numbers of faulty Becker in the last time are the reason, why I am hesitating with buying new BK21. I was planning to add BK5 + BK21 in my collection, but now I am thinking
to skip it both, save some more money and buy a knife from another quality level (BlackHeart).

3 out of thousands...
Don't let that stop you!

exactly. out of 1000s and 1000s and 1000s and 1000s, probably Ethan's best seller over what? 30 years?

a handful broke.

maybe there was a batch of bad ones in heat treat, and out of those, a few got exposed to some extremes.

that's why you test your tools.

QC can't find them all.

out of ALL the ones that broke, as i recall, only a couple weren't covered, or at least SHOULD NOT have been covered due to obvious abuse

i can think of one exception where the guy was gunning for a new knife from a yard sale purchase because he didn't want a used one for a bargain price.

btw, nice job with the saw ;) that looks like an actual heat treat problem ;) ;) ;)

I'm not surprised that Ethan and Ka-Bar have done more than what's right, or expected of them. :)

At the risk of flogging a dead horse...
...I'm really hoping they don't tell me that I was "abusing" the blade...

You WERE abusing the knife. Drastically! You should NEVER get a blade bound up, and THEN continue to pound on it behind the point where it's wedged in. Not only does that not make any sense in the first place, I'll bet you lunch I can break any knife on the planet that way. Physics never sleeps.

Ugh....sorry bro. I've always been told NEVER baton on the handle side period. Always on the tip side of the log...

This is 100% correct. It's a simple matter of leverage.

Let this be a lesson to all of us. Again. ;)

Yeah...
It stings, but you're right, I was being a dummy.
Without knowing it, I rolled the dice, and lost. 😒

I've learned so much in the last 36 hrs.
I've learned the truth in what I've heard Ethan say: "I'm German, I can break anything." (I'm mostly Deutsch as well) even a BK2.
I've learned that while knowledgeable, witty, and experienced, the Beckerheads are just plain good guys who know how to properly (yet tactfully) rib a guy for boneheaded stunts, and put a newbie on the right track.
I've learned that Ethan goes out of his way for anything that has his name on it, as well as the guy that owns it.
I've learned why Kabar has been around as long as they have.

It won't happen again. My blades are WAY too precious to me to be silly or reckless with them.

I'll keep y'all posted on my little self inflicted knife soap opera. 😉

What he said!!
Short of something enchanted from Lord of the Rings universe,
or a $400+ semi-custom blade, you won't beat a Becker (especially for the money!!).
And they have nearly 31 flavors (so to speak) to choose from, for whatever you got going on.

This thread alone should be all the advertising you need as far as Ethan Becker's and Ka-Bar's
ability/willingness to address even the possibility of failure on their part.
Customer for life here, and I'm THE knife guy in my little circle of influence.
What do you think I'll recommend to my folks?

You made a poor choice using that knife, but you've learned from it. That's NOT a loss. Carry on!

No one is born knowing this stuff. We all have to learn from our mistakes, and hopefully we'll be guided by others with more experience. :)

You win, dude. You get it. Welcome! :)

Thanks man.
'preciate it! 😀

Dont sweat it. Anything made by man can break. Nothing is perfect. Im sure K-Bar will get you a new one.

I really like your attitude JTmister...
We've all learned something here, one way or another. Your a genuine man and I hope ya hang around. I think this thread would count towards a Beckerhead trial. Get your number while you can, not many left!

I agree. Takes a big man to own up to a making a dumb mistake, not get all thin skinned about it, and appreciate when he's being both ribbed, and bailed out. Seems like JT is a man of character.

Thanks, 😀
Means a lot man!
I'd like to join the BK&T clan, I looked at Moose's "let's roll" thread and I think I meet the requirements...
No BF speeding tickets, I actually own a few Beckers (and love em!), and I've posted quite a bit the Becker subforum....
...can't quite remember what else there was, if anything...
If a blooded Beckerhead could point me in the right direction, I'd love to jump right in! 😌

Gosh darn it! Way to choke up a guy! 😅
I appreciate it, seriously...
Kinda why I picked (and worded) my screen name the way I did.
I'm just a nice dude, that loves good knives, and chatting with quality guys who know their stuff!
