My bk2 broke under the scales!! WTH!

Big kudos go out to Mr. Ethan Becker and Ka-Bar for such excellent customer service and standing behind their knives.

Ended just as I thought it would - doesn't get much better than that. Ka-Bar and BK&T are top notch - from the top, down.

Op
if they refuse to help/consider making it right, then I'll know that the bk2 is little more than an overpriced, overbuilt, and overhyped whittling knife.

So what have we learned? A BK2 is not an indestructable object. It's a tool made of steel. Ethan Becker is a respectable man, and KaBar's customer service is outstanding.

Didn't most of us already know all of these things? I'm glad you're getting your problem handled OP. Kudos to Ethan and KaBar for going above and beyond...as usual.

and here all you negative nellies already telling us what you're going to do if the warranty isn't covered

fine

all of you have to buy a Becker now ;)

Well, as it just so happens, a few weeks ago, my pops and I were talking about "treating ourselves " to a 4 and 5 for each of us (and an OCK kuk!)
Pretty much a done deal now. Dad really wanted to hear how the wounded bk2 would get handled, not being nearly as familiar with BF, and "Beckerdom" as I am (and I'm still very much learning) he was more bummed/p'oed than I was. I told him that Ethan and Ka-Bar would take great care of me if they deemed that the knife shouldn't have broke. Why I ever doubted...

All true!
Regarding my words, I was drunk on the sour vintage of "No waaaaaaay!! & Oh crap!!"

I wasn't one of the negative nellies, but I HAVE covered for them with my BK purchases these last few weeks..............like another 4 and 15 just yesterday.

Since we're talking about changes in the tangs. When did they move away from the solid full tang? I have a BK9 that's roll stamped. I'm assuming it's a full solid tang? If I wasn't already in bed I'd go check. Lol!

Don't hold me to this, as I'm probably wrong, but I think they began doing the tang cutouts with the 2nd generation BK2. After that, they integrated it into the other Becker knives. The original Kabar model did not have the pommel at the end......the tang followed the handle scales and did not protrude at the bottom. I'm thinking that that first generation model had a solid tang. As I bought all of my Beckers after the 2nd gen BK2 came out, I'm pretty certain that all of my roll stamped beckers are skeletonized.

Hey Bently71, might as well roll over and sleep, cause the 7, 9 & 10 tangs were always cut out, even when the were made by Camillius.

Bummer. In my experience batoning near the handle never goes well. But I'm sure, no matter what he decides to actually do, Mr. Becker will be courteous and respectful.

Yeah, it's not exactly surprising. People love to justify certain other brands their warranty, on paper is better than Kabar. (You know the ones I'm talking about)

But damn if Kabar doesn't go above and beyond for their customers. The warranty in practice is definitely an example of "under promise and over deliver."

I think this comment is worth highlighting. I started another thread and it came out jerkish so I deleted it. Maybe it will play better here. I see this as Ethan / KA-BAR going ABOVE and BEYOND. There were more than a couple of phrases in this thread along the lines of "stand behind the product" "make it right" "do the right thing". The implication being that if they don't give out a new blade they are not doing the right thing. I don't think that 's fair to EB and KA-BAR. I think it's AWESOME that they are going to take care of him. I would never "expect" them to do it in a case like this. No offense JT / OP but it's not like the knife snapped while whittling a tent peg.

And before I get completely flamed, my next purchase will be a Becker from KA-BAR.

This has been a very interesting back and forth....... I guess I should give you all my own personal guidelines for using warranties from companies I buy stuff from which informs me on how I deal with problems that show up here......

Soooooo......

If I buy a "disposable" tool and it breaks then I figure I should have known better and go on with it......

If I buy a good quality "decent" tool and it breaks in what I consider "normal" use, I contact the maker to get it taken care of and to let them know there is a potential problem that they should be aware of...... How they handle the problem depends on wether I buy from them again....... A difference of opinion on what is "normal" use is ok....... And no manufacturer is perfect in each and every way, each and every day..... Perfection is not given to man or his manufacturing endeavors.....

If I knowingly abuse a tool in "abnormal" use ( I do know how to be stupid) and it breaks well, I usually do not want to appear the idiot to the guy on the other end of the phone and swallow the loss......

So basically that is how I want to be treated and how I want to treat you.......

A lot depends on how experienced I think the person I am dealing with is...... If you have been around a while and the really, really dumb factor raises its wart covered head, I am likely to be slightly less sympathetic......... Which is exactly how I expect to be treated........

Golden rule anyone?.........

Ethan

Thanks SD550 didn't want to pull the scales back off. Three stainless screws with locking nuts are holding those babies on.
