My BK9 Fighter...in progress... UPDATE Pg. 4 & 5

Thanks for the compliments guys. I haven't even used a belt sander, though I'm sure it would have made things go a little faster. I find that files let me be more precise and they keep me from working too fast and screwing something up.

And I had in my mind that I would try and keep it along the lines of a classic Bowie/fighter by doing brown scales...but I have to say I'm not hating the idea of ghost jade g10...

I know that it is nothing major, however do you believe the integrity of the blade has been decreased due to the fuller?

Fillers have historically been added to increase lateral strength so I would have to say no. It's similar to fluted rifle barrels...the only thing that decreases is the weight if done properly....and some times strength is even increased.

Now just finish the grips and stamp my name onto the blade and ship it to me. I will even pay 1/3 of the shipping. :)

God, I need to.clean my bench and fire up the grinder.

Great work. Really clean and elegant. Especially when fighting off elephants.

Yes and no. Fullers do increase stiffness relative to weight, but only if you are redistributing the metal. The blade is stiffer than a corresponding blade of the same mass and material with more compact dimensions because the blade can keep a larger cross-section with less material, which is the tradeoff being achieved. Fullering the blade through stock removal doesn't achieve the same thing because it reduces the mass and the amount of material. It weakens the blade...it just weakens it a lot less than it would if the stock were removed in a way that reduced the cross-sectional thickness. With an overbuilt knife, though, it probably will not weaken the blade enough to be a problem and it will make the blade lighter and shift the POB back a bit towards the hilt.

Sorry to butt in. The knife looks great.

That is very cool work! It's gonna look killer with the grivory on it.

Okay, after looking at it, I'm considering the blood groove on a pretty standard 9. But at that point, the edge will be black. I might take it to some 1200 paper, remove the paint from the bevel and blood groove, but leave the rest black.

Ah, drinking always brings out my best idears. That's a whole lot of work though O.O

devilpig, that is a great, great looking knife.

You done one helluva job on it, you should be making the things.

Great work.

Thanks guys....I appreciate the feedback.

I did get some of the jimping done and it came out well. But it's not done yet and it will be a few more days before I get to work on it more. I will update as soon as possible!

Oh and I decided I'm gonna use these bought micarta scales this time. I'll save making some for next time...plus I'm perfecting the process as I haven't gotten it down pat yet.

But they aren't going to look like that when I'm done ;)
