My BK9 Fighter...in progress... UPDATE Pg. 4 & 5

Eh... He's not trying to improve the function of a BK-9. He's changed the function to a fighting knife. The POU has changed. he removed length and weight making it faster in hand, and changed the tip for a better stab. He's improved the knife in it's new function, but it'd lost effectiveness in it's old function. Less weight means it can't chop as well, etc. It's all about what you want to do with the knife. I love it, very cool, nice fondling knife *drools*

Couldn't have said it better myself. I just fight with logs more often than people, fighting knives just aren't for me.

I have a fighting knife. I like it... but it's not useful to me. It's a letter opener or a food prep knife. It's razor sharp... But I can count the knife fights I've been in on one hand. And if they're against other people, I don't even has to use any fingers :-P I still like my fighting knife. I'm actually looking into a kidex sheath for it. Kershaw milatary boot knife BTW.

Nice job on the 9... Personally, I like the original design better. IMHO

Yeah, the original design is great. My intention here wasn't to do what I felt "improved" upon the existing design, it was to make something different altogether. While I call this knife a "fighter", that is mainly referring to the design and characteristics, not what I will be doing with it (hopefully). I do plan to use this knife, but it will likely be used for hunting and dispatching game quickly should the need arise. But I figure if worse comes to worse I can still chop with it and do other tasks. And of course there's always zombies, bigfoot, nessie, etc etc :p

Hopefully some updates will be posted asap.

Scales are coming along:

You going to patina the blade? Mirror shine it? Nice scales btw. I'd have to see how they feel in hand cause they may have some hot spots. Then again, it's not a heavy use knife anymore so it's not as important :-)

This thing is the best, I really like it! I cant wait to see the finished product!

Looks like I'm leaning towards a blued finish. And I'll have to see if there are going to be any hotspots, but like you said, it's not a utility knife so it shouldn't matter much.

I'm so close...should have some updates today :)

And I decided to do some liners...I think it was a good decision.

Alright, well here she is. I will get better pics in the sunlight tomorrow, these are in my basement under florescent lights so they aren't the best.

So just to recap:
-reground the tip to a sharpened clip point
-reshaped the pommel
-removed thumb ramp and added jimping
-machined a fuller in the blade
-added micarta scales that I reshaped also
-convexed the edge
-painted under the scales for rust resistance
-cold blue finish that I buffed with steel wool
-lime green scale liners (I'll try and show these in the pics in the sunlight)
-stainless hardware

Anyway, it was a fun project. Should be a good user.....now I just need a sheath! I'm thinking drop leg dangler in some nice thick cowhide.

I forgot to add, members Haze and Bryfry are the main two sources of inspiration with their Bk9 and Junglas, respectively. Hopefully they drop by and take a look. There were also some other projects on other forums that got the ball rolling for me.

Very cool modifications! Comes together nicely.
