-Renaissance Knives (Don't know why)
-Talley Knives
-Dawn Cutlery
-Sharp Knives (Unless that presents a problem with the electronics company Sharp)
-Oasis Knives (look up the definition... fitting for a good product in the middle of a sea of crap. Might be a problem due to the band Oasis)

Or, for the fun of it, name a high-tech knife company after a remarkable low-tech knifemaker - Kanzi

Kanzi is a living maker, of course, so you might want to check with the university where he is to see if there's any copyright issue involved.

Kanzi is a bonobo chimpanzee.

Kanzi makes flint knives that are very crude by human standards, but remarkably advanced for a chimp - right about at the "missing link" transition stage.

Knives are primal. Knives are the core technology of our species. Why give a high-tech precision knife company a name that reflects the instrument's roots?

Other possibilities in the same vein . . .

Assuming these will all be lockbacks, perhaps .."posi-lock" or "reliable"or Reliable Lockback Knives, maybe even "Old Reliable"

as a point of fact, just in case anyone is considering the name "Native American Knives" suggested above: in many places, you are legally barred from using the term "native american (stuff)" unless the makers of the (stuff) are recognized members of recognized tribal groups. so for example, you cannot legally sell things labelled "native american art" unless the artists can "prove" they have valid tribal ties. (lots of off-topic issues there which i am sidestepping, btw)

reading mr. mattis' post, i thought, hey, naming a knife company after a WOMAN, wow, what a neat idea...how about Artemis, the goddess of the hunt (also known as Diana)? too bad "amazon" is taken...amazonian knives?

i was searching the online encyclopedia of mythology and came up with: Itzpapalotl, an Aztec goddess described as "Obsidian Knife Butterfly"; Achiyalatopa, a Zuni godmonster with feathers made of flint knives...or how 'bout Bes, a great little guy, who "With his swords and knives he wards off evil spirits, and with his instruments he creates a din to frighten them off"?

oh...sorry. i'm getting kinda wild-eyed, you say? i think it must be time to get off the computer now...

COOL mythology site! I'm just starting to nose around there. There are a bunch of Mediteranean fertility deities who carry pruning knives, for the next time somebody wants to name a hawkbill.

Dactyl

Dactyl Cutlery
Dactyl Knife and Tool

I followed that mythology site Silverwing linked in her post above, and did a search on "iron." (I tried "smith" and got nothing but articles by a professor named Smith.) One of the hits was Dactyl -

In Greek mythology, they are demons believed to live on Mount Ida in Phrygia (Asia Minor), or on the Isle of Crete. They were considered to be the first metallurgists: they discovered iron and the art of working metals by fire. They belonged to the retinue of the goddess Cybele. The Dactyls are sometimes identified with the Cabiri, Curetes and Corybantes; mostly because of the mystery cults that surrounded those groups. Their name is derived from daktylos ("finger") and is probably based either on their skill with metals or on their small size.

Here, then is a name that suggests the knife as an extension of your hand, with a link to pioneering metal working skill. And it's probably OK if it people think of pterodactyls when they see the name.

Here are more from that Mythology page ( www.pantheon.org ):

Lagua might be a better choice for a company based in the Northwest:
A supernatural being who spoke through a Haida shaman who had captured Lagua by clenching his teeth. Lagua figures in the discovery of iron, ushering the Haida into the Native American Iron Age.

Any company named for Ilmarinen should make, among other things, the best fixed blade puukko and the best multi-tool:
A Finnish sky-god, lord of wind and weather. As the divine smith he created the firmament in which he placed the sun and the stars. He also created the sampo on which the heavens rest. Ilmarinen gave mankind fire and he taught them how to work with ores and make iron objects. He is also the patron of travelers.

Ogoun might be a name for an outfit that makes in-your-face politically incorrect nasty knives.
The Haitian voodoo god of war, fire, politics, iron, and thunderbolts. He is the patron god of smiths' fire. The machete or sable is his attribute. Ogoun is especially fond of rum and tobacco.
