Our NASCAR detractors seem to have vanished BUT so have our supporters.

Shall we let this thread do like the old soldier....just fade away ?

With a few more fans like you, it might behoove us to continue.Since you're a newbie,I'm the old goat that started this ,I believe. Been watching auto racing since it started growing just after WW II .Saw my first one in 1946 or 1947 & have seen a metric ton of changes & several generations of drivers come & go.

Any friend of Jr.'s is a friend of mine !

Safe racing !

Uncle Alan :)

Rain-shortened deal sucked, but the immenent threat of weather made for an unusually exciting race for MIS. 'Krash Kahne' was very impressive in winning after going 1 lap down...seems he and Hamlin are the new 'young guns' to be reckoned with.
It was refreshing to see Smoke and Jeff Green settle their 'run in' like gentlemen...seems as though a lot of the other guys would do well to learn something from how that deal was handled.
Jr. continues to fly under the radar with a great finish, but with little fanfare...as little as is possible for him...and don't look now, but the "bug-eyed dummy" has moved into the top-ten.

...Thanks for the welcome uncle Alan. Been an Earnhart fan even when it wasn't the "fashionable" thing to be...LOL. Remember when Dale Sr. got more boo-birds than that guy who races for Dupont?...LOL. My dream car was the old '64 Plymouth like the one Petty used to run. That was the car for me...I guess that dates me as well huh?...

Another welcome to the thread from a 'younger generation' NASCAR fan...looking forward to what you have to share...

OK, boys, you heard it here first! This week at Infineon is the week Jeff Gordon will break his 0-fer- streak and move back into the top ten.

Curtis Turner was a wealthy timber baron from Virginia. He & Little Joe Weatherly did put on some driving shows. Usually the driver of the less dominant car would actuelly block for the other. I've seen 'em put the other challengers into the wall more than once. Survival of the meanest & fittest.

Many stories have circulated about Curtis. I have talked to him at various tracks. He was polished, not rough around the edges like Joe & they were an unlikely team.He was a tall well built man, close to my 6' 4" & moviestar handsome. In the '60's there was virtually zero factory help & most sponsors were the car dealer,Jom's hardware & Smitty's wrecker service.
Curtis evidently saw that NASCAR was growing fatter & more powerful all the time. Word from them was like a message handed down from High. He decided to try organizing drivers to get a bigger piece of the pie , maybe. It was pretty much as failed enterprise because he was banned with a few others.....
I remember a compact car race shown one Sunday afternoon.Curtis was driving a Ford Falcon,Petty probably drove one of Chrysler's Valiant & I'm not sure about the Corvair driver either.
The first Falcon was a great seller BUT it was underpowered with a 144CI motor. Later the cubes were upped to 170 & it was a great compact car then.

The flag fell on this short roadcourse race & poor Curtis was outclassed from the start. After being lapped he went into an ess & rolled his Falcon. As the announcer was trotting a mike to him some bystander asked what happened. He said he was embarassed to drive that pos & deliberately flipped her. All this didn't make it on the air ,of course.

Most younger people remember the showdown at Charlotte when he tried to gey his track completed.
Curtis died in a plane crash while flying into Roanoke Virginia. It was a sad day when we lost this man who had put a touch of class in racing !

Safe racing !

Have to put my $$$ on 'Smoke'...fast in practice today (fastest) and with something to prove after being in a little, although injury induced, slump.
You can't forget he won last years race w/o 4th gear...held it in gear w/ one hand and got up on the wheel with the other...pretty awesome...!

Here are my picks:

1. Smoke
2. Robby Gordon
3. Jeff Gordon
4. Boris Said
5. Mark Martin
6. Jimmie Johnson
7. Kevin Harvick
8. Kasey Kahne
9. Jr.
10. Ron Fellows

Honestly, road courses really aren't my idea of racing. Guess Gurney & Penske's sport kinda' oozed it's virus into NASCAR.
Don't get me wrong,it beats watching grass grow or paint dry but I cannot get very excited over it.

Safe racing !

Uncle Alan :D

Dang Alan, tell us how you really feel...:D

I like the road courses...of course my driver usually excels at them, so a little biased...gives a little change up 2X/ year and gives NASCAR a little diversity in the face of its' detractors. Don't like the 'ringers' that some teams employ...think that there should be some sort of penalty for those teams that use them...unless that they can prove that the regular driver is unable to physically compete. Funny thing is though, a 'ringer' has never beaten a regular Cup guy at a road course and we're looking at some pretty impressive pedigrees...Fellows...Said...Pruett...etc..
Some say it's an uneccessary expense, but a recent article said it costs 10X the $ to develop and maintain a plate program...ie Daytona and 'Dega...than it does to put out a road course car. Some teams have even said they are using a car that was 8 years old on the road courses...just hang an updated body...
Anyway...just some drivel for you race junkies...
Bring On Daytona!!! Wooo!

Yeah, I called the winner but there were some surprises too. I never expected Terry Labonte or Ryan Newman to perform as well as they did. Smoke was right up there as expected but you can't help the mechanical problems - same with Robbie Gordon. I was disappointed in Jr.'s struggling all day - he had junk and never had a chance. Kyle Bush was driving like an out of control maniac as usual - how long before the veterans just start punting him every race?

Race was a bit unusual in that the top 10 finishers were somewhat of a surprise excepting Pretty Boy's win.
Did you see the amazing [AMAZON ] lady he announced his engagement to ? Have no idea of his height but she appears to be one tall woman.

Now, polish your inverted fishbowl & tell me if the Braves will exer get out of the sewer ?

Thank you,exalted seer !

Start Your Engines!

Forecast is iffy so far. A rain-shortened race ? Green,white,checkered ?

On the plus side, summer evening showers seem to come violenty for a few minutes with long intervals in between.

Anyhow ,Saturday night is on us & the qualifying hasn't started yet. Any favorites from the "Killer tout" ?

Safe racing !

Uncle Alan :D

I would have to give the nod to the Hendricks boys at Daytona. Watch for Jimmy Johnson to win with Gordon in the top five and Shrub in the top ten. Never count Smoke out of the top five either. I'm expecting a good showing from Jr. this week, too, as well as Biffle.

Boris Said was a surprise ,bumping the paint car & the builder's big box boys back a wee bit. Shelmerdine hung on & made the field too.

Junior has a top 5 first lap but his second lap put him back to 21st or so. He & Michael have never qualified well for this race according to D W & history.

Was Junior stroking ?

Would some of you faster/better/more accurate young'uns fill in the top 20 line-up please ?

Safe racing !

Uncle Alan
