Need a new knife....

Why not some cheap folder where edge doesn't hold, lock will definitely fail on you and preferably very ugly...guarantied it will make you love your RAT knives back real fast:)

For some reason I fixated on Bark River last night.

Someone beat me to it, sort of, but you could carry a knife from your arch Nemesis (According to the WS&S, and General forums), the Busse BAD -- Boney Active Duty

(Dog not included).

Or the other "Inexpensive, hard use" knife company here on BF: Himalayan Imports

Heck, I even got a nice Karda from Auntie Yangdu with my last kukri:

The R10 is a bit bigger than you asked for, but is my favorite HI general use knife, and for some reason, I can get this thing so sharp I barely feel it when I cut myself (story for another time).

Or just say "FU" to small knives, and pick an HI Bowie (for size reference, the one at the top is 24.25")

Not sure about the ugly part but how about a Gerber Gator. They used to be made in USA, not sure if they still are. Those rubber handles feel pretty good. A few years ago I used one to field dress a couple of deer, best I remember it did alright.

I am buying that BRK patch...if you use that please write up a few words about how it handles.

I have a pair of the gator's great folders..all time fav :D

If you're looking at a folding, I'd recommend a Zero Tolerance 0300 series. Toughest tightest lockup I've ever seen on a knife. S30V steel, titanium lock, and looks cool too. It is a bit heavy...for a folding pocket knife, but worth it for me. If it's a bit too big, look at the Zero Tolerance 0200, which is a bit smaller.

For fixed blades, I'm gonna have to recommend Bark River as well. That colonial looks great. If you want something really tough, go with the Bravo-1. If you want something that is smaller and a better slicer, check out the Aurora or PSK. I used to spend hours browsing on Knives Ship Free and The Knife Connection websites looking at all the different models. The different handle materials are cool.

Good luck!

not real familar with barkies, to they have a scandi grind with four in. blade and natural wood handles

Not sure why people think Busse and us are at odds. Many years ago we had a couple of run-ins but they were not fights, simply debates on design. As we have stated here many times on the forum, we don't dislike anyone in this industry. That includes Ontario, Busse, KaBar, Kershaw, SOG,....the list goes on. We wish them all well because they all make damn good stuff and to lose one of them is a reflection on the industry as a whole. RAT Cutlery is in competition with no one. I'm just as happy for someone when they buy a blade from another company as when they buy from RAT Cutlery. This whole industry is really small. Too many pissing contests for the size of industry it is. I say we can all get along because, IMO, there are not enough knife companies out there.

I'll have my stuff down there if you want to use it, especially the Shango. Thanks for suggesting that guys.

If you are looking for an awesome setup:

The Emerson a-100 is a pretty good knife:

It became a GREAT knife when I had Richard J off the forums turn it into a scandi.

You can borrow this lil bugger if you want :) Briand Andrews makes it, and it splits molecules

You could try out an EnZo Trapper in D2 w/ Micarta handles and a flat grind:

Or in stainless w/ a Scandi grind like the one on the left:

I could send you either of those if you wanted to play with one, the scandi has been used hard for a while.

If you wanted something different, the Kershaw Shallot shown is in the top 3 outdoor knives, IMO. Ultra tough, nice and sharp, easy to keep the gunk out of the lock, holds an edge well, stainless, etc. I don't have that one anymore though.

I have this and am still trying to find something it can't do, plus you get to order from 2 Wolves!

...to carry to the jungle with me this month. Not a RAT knife...I'm sick of those but someone else's knife. Some type of small fixed blade or folder. Will have a cheap machete but it would be nice to take something new, use it and take some photos. Any ideas?

Here are some considerations....

One with a full size handle: Bark River Knives, Gunny

Three with compact handles: Bark River Knives, Mini North Star & Pro Scalpel II & Woodland Special

It will definitely not be ready on time, to go with you. But I bet if you held a Randall Combat companion (5" blade) you would use it forever.

Let this be a plus 1 for the above mentioned (ratasmojados) Randall :D

How about a Bark River Gunny or Bark River Woodland Special?

Or my favorite "small" knife that I use to replace my folder on EDC sometimes. The Kephart Companion--the smaller knife shown here:

I'm loving my new Manix 2 carbon fibre in S90V, I wouldn't hesitate to put it through it's paces in Peru.

Or how about a Canadian classic, a Grohmann #1 Canadian Belt Knife (above) or a Canadian Army Knife #3 (below). Both are available with optional micarta handles, flat grind, or in carbon steel.
