Need a new knife....

BB_Amazon_Bloodwood.jpg

I be liking this a lot. Bark River has too many models to choose from!

Bought my dad one last week for his b-day. Neat little blade and a very comfy handle. With the sheath fits right in your front pocket. :thumbup:

I love my Howling Rat...king of the 4" wood blades I think. It would love to visit Peru!

Blackjack Grunt!

It's a smidge bigger then 4" (OAL: 11", 5 5/8" blade, 10Cr17 SS convex edged), but I really really want to see how an inexpensive knife stacks up against some others. I got mine for only $21 NIB but a new sheath is definitely a must.

...to carry to the jungle with me this month. Not a RAT knife...I'm sick of those but someone else's knife. Some type of small fixed blade or folder. Will have a cheap machete but it would be nice to take something new, use it and take some photos. Any ideas?

How about a Buck Vantage? About $25 for the base model, made in the United States, and pretty solid IMO;

Snatched this from a Google image search;

i've got the tanto version, the small, i think it's called. made a remedial leather sheath for it. i've used it a little, and so far it's held up well. that top edge kills batons though.

That one's the nicest variant in polished G10 and S30V. MSRP is around $75, IIRC, so you can probably net it for around $40 or so if you look hard enough.:)

Great knife, but the QC for fit/finish hasn't been quite what I'd like to see. I've had to file the liner lock a little on a few of them to get them to lock up properly, and some have had off-center blades when properly tensioned (though that's basically just cosmetic).

Still a great deal any way you look at it. :cool:

I don't know how Buck can make that knife in the USA for that kind of money? (and that's all I'm saying about that knife being made in the USA)

I do agree that the fit and finish isn't what I would expect from Buck USA. I don't want to rub a sore spot however the Ontario RAT 1 folder has the Buck Vantage beat hands down.

By being more lenient with fit/finish rejects. By lifting QC a bit they are able to put out more product using less material (due to discarding of low-precision parts). I'm pretty sure that's how they're managing it. It also helps that it's a simple design.

I can't figure out how to post pics on here, sorry :(

I have some pics posted here, two knives custom made by The North River Forge in Canada, He makes knives and axes made the way they used to in the 1700s-1800s.

Most 1095 steel, also does modern knives in L steel.

Pics are of a patch knife, 3.5 inch blade with cross hatching on the handle and a really nice sheath (he also makes the custom sheath to go with the knife and no additional charge).

Second knife is of a custom made coffin handle bowie knife, this had a lanyard added and the clip point part was also sharpened, these were added personal preferences.

I must have lucked out on my Buck Vantage; no flaws whatsoever.:thumbup: for $25 I wasn't expecting much but I was surprised..shaving sharp out of the box and a solid lockup and operation.

3 out of every 4 that I've seen are totally fine. :thumbup:

There are a lot of cool knives in this thread!
I would second (or third?) the recommendation of a JK Knife made by Stomper (BF name). I just got a Scout Jr in the mail and it is really nicely made. I like the look of his Kephart model as well.
