Net prices on the knife exchange

I've recently made a few offers for knives on the exchange. A couple of the sellers were asking for $$ Net to them on their posts. When I made the offers, I assumed that this would be the total price paid, shipped. After my offers were accepted and the paypal was sent, the sellers came back asking for paypal and shipping fees. I'm curious why sellers that list this way can't add in the shipping/other fees and list the total price of their item? IMO, it should be the sellers responsibility to do their homework and ask a total price (with their fees already included). This would solve the problem of ambiguity. I know shipping varies but not by that much. Both deal were lost for a dollar amount that ranged from $3-6. Am I totally off base here?

Nope thats why I just pass on those threads, I'll find the knife somewhere else if they can't simply add the price of shipping and whatever into the total.

Ditto.
If you see "net to me", "gift option", or "add ___ for PP fee's" just back out and look elsewhere.

Plenty of sellers out there that follow the Paypal TOS.

You aren't alone in your feelings - there are a couple other current discussions on this topic. (Feel free to participate in those, as well)

I can't sell here yet, but if and when I do it would just make sense to me to put say 150$ and that is the price to your door, no hidden shipping fees or any other bs. That's pretty weak on their end.

Thanks for all the responses! I didn't think I was too far off base. It was extremely aggravating that they weren't willing to sell after accepting my offers and sending payment. Both items are still for sale in the exchange. I hope others see this thread and force sellers to commit to posting a final price.

Yep I agree with you and avoid those listings for the most part. I tend to think someone who is either too stupid to figure out the Paypal fees and add them to the cost or too lazy to do so probably shouldn't be trusted with my money.

I've passed on many deals because they said "net to me" "Gift" or "add $xx for fee's"

When I sell I don't ask for gift or ask the buyer to pay MY fee's. One price to you door and I will not buy from those that don't offer the same.

*********MY 2 Cents************
Read the POST--ASK lots of questions....BE CLEAR with your questions and always make certain there is FULL DISCLOSURE with PRICE and Condition of Item..
In the 10 years I have been HERE----The folks I have dealt with.....THEY KNOW I don't pull punches..Im FULLY CLEAR with prices and shipping and I FEEL all haggling of prices should be done in PRIVATE
I have accepted GIFT payments from my buddies I have dealt with FOR YEARS..BUT that's between us PRIVATELY....

NET-- Pay Fees-- Shipped Etc.... Each Individual does there own thing in here provided its with in the RULES and REGS.. So my advice as a seasoned VET here
Get comfortable in here..Enjoy OUR FAMILY we have here... Deal with folks with good communication... Full disclosure and INTEGRITY... You cant go WRONG>............

Okay this is a wee diff from the other discussions in that you say you did send payment thru PayPal and After you made payment Then seller comes on and asks for 'fee' monies? Isn't this the same thing as price jacking? I'm trying to wrap my brain around this.
You SENT the money? That means that Seller GOT paid. What was the deal. Send me more or no knife? How did you get the money back?
Isn't this actually illegal, not just a PP TOS Infraction?

Greykilt,
I sent an offer for a specific amount and the seller said the lowest I can accept is $xxx. I agreed and sent over the specified amount. The seller then came back and said this was separate from fees and at I should send over another $xx. He then referred to his ad here on the forums and said that his price was always NET and that I should send over the rest. After going back and forth he said that he said he would ship the knife but at is point I had a sour taste in my mouth and asked for a refund.

As far as I am concerned there is only one way to sell anywhere!
My stated price includes any fees that Paypal, my bank, my credit card company, or even my wife or dog charge me.
That is what I refer to as cost of sales!

There may be free shipping or not depending on the item and where it's to be shipped to? But it will clearly state that.

I don't care to do business with people that want me to lie about weather it's a gift or merchandise or said value of that item for international shipping.

The only time a seller is justified in adding a separate charge is as a business. Adding up the cost of the merchandise is one subtotal, adding in shipping & handling is another, and taxes is another.

This allows the merchant to lower the % for shipping & handling since more than one item can go in a box but tax may vary despite merchandise discounts while the tax gets paid on the base price.

When ever I see any ad stating "plus fees' or "net to me", I can't help but think that the person is actually a dealer skirting the membership rules here. Those are terms that a dealer would use. The only time someone who isn't a dealer would be using those terms is when they are playing games. Or I guess if they aren't intelligent enough to do the math themselves...

Net to me = me passing by that sale. No way around it. I'm not going to waste my time on that mess. As a buyer on this forum myself, I want a single price out the door. No extra adding of anything. I will say that folks the majority of the members I've both bought from and sold to have been outstanding.

This is how I feel as well. ALL of my sales clearly state "shipped/tyd (to your door)" this is the price I'm willing to accept including me paying the fees for the convenience of using PayPal and USPS priority shipping. This also includes insurance. The insurance is for the seller...a lot of sellers don't understand that. "if you want it, insurance is extra" is a load of bull! If that item gets lost in transit it's the seller's responsibility to make good on the sale.

Excellent points. I wholeheartedly agree.

That is because we share a birthday bro, why else? ;)
