NEW 4.7 Thread

No word yet on my July 18th 4.7 seconds purchase either. I did receive my 4.7 from July 5th about 1 1/2 weeks ago.

I guess i'm unclear on where the 2nds are pulled out of the run of blades. Maybe during several different phases. Bad grind, pull a few, imperfection in the surface, pull a few more, uneven cerakote, pull a few more. Add them all up, sell them, then when there's time, get around to sharpening them and boxing them up.

Still I think if they know there's a fixed number of factory 2nd blades to sell, they'd be ready to go pretty quickly.

From what I can gather, each production step is followed by a quality control check. So peen and check, fit and check, finish grind and check, etc., and then if at any point there is an imperfection it ends up as a second or less and pulled out of the run of preorders. Anything I've picked up on Monday sales have been delivered in 3 weeks, but it seems the gap has been growing more recently, and I'm not sure why that is.

I just grabbed that 3V 4.7 off of the exchange (admittedly for a premium) to fulfill my 4.7 desires for now. The hard part is whether to cancel the 20CV and CFV 4.7 seconds that I'm still waiting to get shipped. I guess I'll just have to take my aggression out on the 3V while waiting.

Makes sense, and good to know! Thanks for the welcome. I've been a lurker for years, but dove in a few months ago with the purchase of a Boker Plus Rold Scout. Now i'm moving on to bigger and better things...eventually ;)

I thought about doing the same thing after seeing a few of the knives that have popped up on the FB fan group. Decisions, decisions...

For those wondering why the S!K website listed the 4.7 3V seconds as out of stock but didn't give the "steel unavailable" alert, I was curious as well. The website allowed me to complete an order for one with no issues, after telling me to pick a handle color besides red linen. We'll see if anything else happens.

Now I have four 4.7s all fully paid for, all in various stages of production or shipment. Need to get rid of some of these.

I'm actually wanting to pick up a 4.7 in 20cv. Are these you're talking about f2 orders from recently? I wonder if Survive would allow people in your situation to switch with someone like me? They refund you and charge me?

Yes, F2 from July 5 onward. I'll probably keep these on order since I have to be close to receiving them soon (...?), then take care of shuffling them around after.

How's everyone liking the CruForge V?

LOVE IT!!! It's similar to 01, might even have better performance, edge retention for cutting and carving. It also strops like 01 and CFV can be made very sharp. I have not chopped or batoned with it yet but I believe it will also do well here because it can be brought back pretty easily if you know what you're doing.

Yes, any chipping with the mystery steel? How's the cerakote holding up after use?

I have not chipped mine so far in about 3 hours of use on a few oak dowels and other treated lumber. As for the coating so far it hasn't scratched but does leave ghost marks. Per my other comment above I have not batoned with it yet however I suspect it'll take a long long while to actually scratch it.

Any recommendations on sharpening?

I use the GRE Industries 4 sided strop bat found here - http://www.jreindustries.com/strops.htm. But any strop will do. I'd suggest a coarse compound and non-loaded leather for a 2 sided strop. I use these compounds: https://www.amazon.com/Enkay-150-Po...1474047371&sr=8-6&keywords=polishing+compound

I use the WorkSharp Field sharpener in the field - http://www.worksharptools.com/guided-field-sharpener.html - FYI, this sharpener is great for 3v and 20cv as well.

You can also use a cardboard edge, the sleeve of a canvas jacket or even your jeans or to polish a blade. That's the beauty of simple carbon steel blades.

Are normal sharpening compounds working for you with the CFV? I'd imagine that with the amount of vanadium in there you might need something more aggro like diamond or CBN paste to speed up cutting?

I use the above mentioned strop bat with coarse (enkay black emery), medium, fine and finish with untreated leather and I have had excellent results. You can use diamond stones but it removes metal. I've also used ceramic rods, including the one on my field sharpener, to get out stubborn microfolds on my 01, 1095, D2 & 3V blades. I am sure it'll work on CFV I just haven't had a need for it yet.

Actually, I was thinking more about diamond or cbn stropping emulsions — I've been using a big 2-sided ambush/DLT strop loaded with 4 and 8 micron bark river CBN emulsions on my Ambush Alpha, and that's been working out well (after re-profiling the knife, that is;*that thing had a really thick, uneven grind when I got it, and I wound up investing in some good stones to sort it out, and add to my kit for general usage).

Reckon the same stuff'll work wonders on CFV, but wasn't sure if the conventional compounds would, so wanted to clear that up for anyone making buying decisions around that approach to sharpening. Glad to hear it's not a bear to sharpen. From all of the knifemaker accounts of it being a really tough steel to finish-sand, I was worried that'd translate into being very difficult to sharpen using conventional materials.
