NEW 4.7 Thread

Question to all: are there any photos floating around that visually compare the 4.7 to the new-variant 4.1? I'm curious to see them side by side, but can't find anything, despite many searches. Thanks!

Check out the S!K's Instagram account. I think Guy has posted some pics of the new 4.1 with the 4.7, but I could be wrong.

Are you talking about the regular new spec 4.1 or the "custom" 4.1 coming from the old scandis?

If you're talking about the former then OBX is right and I got that pic right here.

Oh wow - so the CFV (gray blade, natural scales) is the 4.7, and the new standard 4.1 is the one to the right of it?

Definitely makes me question whether I need one of each! In my mind, and from descriptions, I'd imagined a more substantial size difference!

Many thanks for the photo!

Crazy, isn't it? I think you have it right. The CFV is in the middle and the new 4.1 is to the right of that, next to the 2.7. The 4.1 has a camo handle.

Now the old spec 4.1 and 5 had more differences, but even though the new spec 4.1 is a little thinner than the 4.7 it's only about a half inch shorter in the blade with an almost identical handle length.

I have a 4.1 on order and I'm anxious to try it next to my 4.7 to see which is the One. But, if you're only interested in having one, it's hard to say. The 4.7 has a more contoured handle and is a tiny bit thicker and longer. I'd say if the only blade you'll have on you is a knife, then go with the 4.7. If you're out adventuring with an axe or saw and a knife then go with the 4.1.

The handle on the 4.7 does look very nice.
My original ordering logic was that for the thickness of a 4.7 I'd rather have the length of the 6, so I went with the 3.5 and 6 and skipped the ones in between.
I still think that will be a very functional pair, but with the production order and schedule being what is I've just started picking up anything I can get my hands on.
The Ugly Bettys have made that a pretty attractive option. ;)

I'm a bit torn, as I have a 4.1 in 3V and 4.7 second in CFV ordered, and seeing the minimal difference leads me to believe I'll probably prefer the 4.7. I'm using an ambush alpha, currently, which is a bit over 5", and while I do think it's a hell of a knife (after reprofiling the grind), the Survive 4.7 handle contouring looks a lot better. The alpha's comfortable enough, but even with the sculpting in the g10 scales on mine, I find I a bit twisty in the hand when wet.

The different thickness might make for a noticeable difference in weight as well...

The 4.7 is powerful, in a manner of speaking, and I'm expecting the 4.1 to have a bit more "finesse"...

Yeah, was thinking about that. Right now my two main mid-sized fixed blades are an early BRKT Gunny, in A2, and an Ambush Alpha. The size/heft spread on these is pretty useful, and I'm not sure that I'd really glean too much benefit from having two knifes with more or less the same general profile, but different weights. After using the Gunny for years and years (love the cutting performance — it's a freaking laser, and it's been amply tough and easy to maintain), and using the Ambush since the spring (good knife, but needed a lot of work on the geometry), I'm finding myself concluding that I'm just not that thrilled by the handle ergos on either. The contouring is good and comfortable, but they're both slippery when wet, and tend to rotate on account of their general handle profiles (the gunny's particularly bad for this). With bigger knives than these, I tend to not mind, since I find that chopping's less demanding on edge orientation, since it's easy enough to keep it edge-forward into a chop, and the weight gets the work done. With mid-sized knives, I'm more likely to be powering through cuts (carving, shaving, slicing) and that's when it's taking excess grip pressure to keep things oriented. I mean — it's not terrible — but it can be better.

Seeing the very strong profile/size similarity, I'm kinda wishing that 4.7 CFV factory 2nd I ordered was coming in 3v instead — that'd probably be all I'd want.

Ah, well. Might wind up flipping both once they're here, and picking up a 3v 4.7 once they're a bit more available. Or maybe I'll fall in love with CFV, or the 4.1. Time'll tell, I suppose!

As far as 'powerful' goes, I've got a BK9 and a winkler combat axe (among other things) for power ;) What I'm more concerned with is ergos — I've got reasonably large mitts, and like larger (but not too large) handles, with good friction (ie. rough micarta). The 4.7 looks like just the ticket. If the 4.7/4.1 fail to do the trick for me, my next stop's probably a Winkler belt knife, but I suspect the 4.7 is probably going to do the trick. I've also looked at some of Busse's mid-sized options, but I don't have the inclination or appetite for the weird secret handshakes decoder rings and general shenanigans that it seems to require to get a Busse.

A bit of research goes a long way, if you want to order direct from the company. First thing is to sign up for their newsletter to know when models are being debuted from one of the three companies, then order them on the corresponding site. They also have their bladeforums "Ganzas" wherein they preview the prices&models that will be for sale a week or so in advance, then post a "Go" thread on the day of the sale and accept orders via e-mail first-come / first-serve. They also attend various knife shows... Those are the popular ways I am familiar with. The trouble with direct sales can be the Hogs who snarf up as many as they can of a given model and leave newbies empty-handed - I haven't personally had an issue like that and have also seen some hogs be mighty generous, but they enjoy making it a struggle sometimes ;)
Re-sales are common on the busse exchange here on BF (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/804-Busse-Swamprat-Scrapyard-Knives-For-Sale), some guys list on other forums and the bay as well. You'll occasionally catch below-retail items on the exchange, usually used, but they all retain their value pretty well.

I'm worried that if I keep making this sad face it's going to stick like this. Forever! The only cure might be a shipping notice for my 20CV. Kids and kittens run away upon seeing my grumpy countenance. Babies cry. Flowers wilt.

For the sake of the environment and humanity!

Ha ha, I'm with you! Still waiting for my 20CV also...

Well, after 18 months of waiting, my two 4.7s arrived at my house around midday yesterday. Unfortunately, by the time I got home after work, all that was left was a torn-open and empty box on the porch. Kind of bums me out about internet knife buying in general. Perhaps I should look for better investments of my time and cash.

Are you serious?! You finally got your knives and they were stolen right off your porch? I know it didn't sound like you were joking, but that is so terrible I'm in disbelief. Has something like this happened in your neighborhood before?

That SUCKS! I hope this is not a common thing for you.👮🏻

Thanks for the sympathies. I have had a lot of things delivered to my home over the years, and this is the first parcel that I know has arrived and been stolen. There was another package that disappeared about 5 years ago, but that was sent to me (without notice) when I was away over Christmas for 10 days, so anything could have happened.

That said, it's not unheard of for this type of thing to happen in the neighborhood where I live. I am right next to an inner city high school, and there are some opportunist kids around who'll take something if they can and they think it has value.

The USPS guys tend to go in cycles over how much care they'll take about leaving packages where they can be seen or taken. They used to always leave things with my neighbor if I wasn't at home, but now they just leave them on the porch. I put up signs this morning saying not to leave any parcels.

Two packages got opened and taken yesterday, one was just a $16 thing which Amazon promptly replaced, but losing over $400 of knives after a 18-month wait and little chance that USPS will honor the insurance is harder to stomach.

Dang that sucks. Who wants to pull some money together to get this man a 4.7? I would be in for $20. Maybe we could get the fine folks at Survive to send him one at a discount. It just makes me sick to think of paying all that money, waiting for months and not getting a single knife.
