"As you can see, I'm wearing a hospital bracelet."
"Things just tend to happen."

Priceless. Darwin Award Finalist at his finest. :D

My gun blued hawk head turned out sweet. Making good progress on it now. Should have my mod done in a few days. Also, I'm thinking about buying a TDI clip for my 14. Anyone have any photos of a TDI attached to a 14?

Can't wait to see the pics. I'm astounded by how handy those little hawks are. I need to pick up a kydex sheath for mine from the man.

Got my Wetterlings large hunter's axe in yesterday. Been without one that size since somebody lifted my old 20" swedish at a campsite a couple of years ago. The wetterlings is pretty nice. Couple coats of linseed oil on the handle and a finish sharpening and I think it will serve just fine. I'm trying to fight off the urge for a Gransfors mini. Since I played with the one Jeff Randall carries at the gathering I keep thinking how handy it would be. Might get a Vaughan sub zero and mod it instead.

Any advice how to go about sharpening my hawk? Never tried that before.

A little re-profile with a file. Not a bad job at all, it goes pretty fast. I thinned the bevel back about 3/4 inch. From there I convexed mine, but I convex the car keys so don't go by me. I'm sure fininshing it up with a stone in a circular fashion would work just as well, if not even better. They really take a scary edge.

Thanks tw. I was going to file before sharpening, but not sure about the convexing part. The edge is black from the bluing, lol.

Got my CS TH yesterday and stripped it. I avoided the Citrus stuff you had trouble with, grabbed something else from Home Depot, and it was completely spotless in 30 mins. The finish under the paint is kinda cool but I want a brown/rust finish so soon the sanding will commence.

The head and haft fit is unbelievably bad. I'm actually worried that the taper on the haft end won't be enough once I do some sanding to even keep the head on. Before I do any of the other junk I want to do, I need to make sure I can actuall get the durn head to fit solidly first. Bleah.

if you sand the eye hole to the point it no longer fits on the handle, give the handle a couple wraps with cloth athletic tape to bulk it up a touch and you'll be good to go. (you can also dye the cloth tape to camouflage it)

Not one freakin' attaboy for my mango patina? Man, I must have ticked some people off.

Aw crap, wanted to say something about that, totally forgot. Thanks for posting. I love my Mora Bushcraft Triflex :D It's a user though, so no forced patina for me.

Think I'm going to buy me a BHK Bushcrafter Knife.

What do you guys think?

Scandi Grind or Flat Grind and why?

Attaboys duly noted. My patina wasn't forced either. I ate a lot of mangos to get that sucker on there! :D

Got some cool stuff today. This first one is totally mistwalker's fault.

The second thing, these AlumaPro Pliers, were just good luck. Found 'em on sale locally for half off.
They normally run around $50. Even better, they only rang up $18 and change. Very cool.

Along with that Spyderco Aqua Salt I got recently, they should contribute to a kickass fishing combo.
Oh yeah, the Rat-L-Trap was in a clearance bin for $2.

I thought all or at least most axe's/hatchets/hawks were already convexed??

but then again I've never bought a new one, and have only seen them convexed..

and I'm really not that big on these so dunno..

Guyon,

I'm really curious to your take on the H1 edge.. please post of a review of the steel once you've had some play with it..

That SALT ain't my first rodeo with H1. It takes and keeps a good edge.
Not as good as some steels, but still good enough that, combined with the corrosion resistance, it's fantastic for a water knife.
I have several of the folders, and my take is that the edge gets better with age and resharpenings.
Some call it "work hardened," and I've seen posts about it in the Spyderco forum. Some folks don't buy it. I think there's something to it.

What's up man. The hawk I got had some kind of attempt at a secondary V grind on it. They may not all be like that. You're right, axes should have a convex grind :D
