New Forum software thread. . .

Spark thanks so much for all your efforts on our behalf.

If folks had any idea how COMPLICATED the V-Bulletin software is and how much time and work is required to configure it they would then appreciate what you have undertaken.

To everyone I say........PATIENCE............Spark will reconfigure the site back to it's old familiar look. He just needs some time to do it.

Spark I am amazed that your where able to accomplish so much in such a short space of time. Well done!

If I can be of any assistance or help please do not hesitate to ask.

Steven

In addition to what's been stated as problems already, pressing the home button gives me the following error message:

woodgood, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Also there is no Control Panel link displayed either (in add to missing section links at top of page)

Thanks for all your work. I know how frustrating updates can be when you have no control on what changes the software vendors make to the programs.

Thanks again,

Brett

Holy shit this is ugly.

Maybe the original was a bit plain, but this is stabbing me in the eyes. Glad you got everything upgraded, I was seeing intermittent CentOS test pages and PHP errors for a while.

Thanks for keeping the place up to date. It has to be one giant pain the ass each time you do these updates.

One thing I have noticed this morning is seeing attached pictures in posts is kind of a mixed bag. Some of the pics which showed up inline in posts yesterday are not showing up inline today.

If you need examples, look in the fixed blades for sale forum.

Thanks for fooling with the headache, Spark. I like things like the quote format, and the Blog area (while off limits now) seems really intriguing.

I agree that readability has suffered a little. In threads, is it because the post text is so plain and it's surrounded by bars and colors everywhere?

Just trying to put my finger on something specific. I'll get used to it, I'm sure, but it's definitely different. Looks and feels more icon/graphic/color heavy.

anyone know how to make it that subscribed threads aint all highlighted in usercp? all my subs back to the beginning are coming up as unviewed.

I like the new layout, and without updates it can leave the forum open (constantly bringing out new security features) so thanks Spark for keeping this play running.

Can we have the old forum back? Please!! I'd rather chew gravel than try to figure out this one and it's ugly too. The joys of newer and better software! Sometimes newer isn't better. Just IMHO....(inserts big smiley face here) : > )

Thanks for your efforts Spark!

A few issues here and there, yes. But, overall, this is lookin' good.

It's a bit like getting a new car. You miss the old, familiar one. You curse at the new one because instead of that familiar little knob to adjust the dashboard light brightness, you have to wade through some stupid menu to find a setting for that. At first, you can't quite seem to get the seat into just the right place... But you'll figure it all out and get used to it.

What you have to remember is that how to adjust the dashboard lights is a minor thing. The new one isn't going to burn a quart of oil every week. No longer are you going to have to keep a piece of 2x4 and a hammer in the trunk so that if you forget to turn off the air conditioning before you shut off the engine, you and crawl under the car, position the 2x4 in the AC compressor clutch and bang on it with the hammer to get it to disengage so that you can start the car again (true story of my old Oldsmobile). Notice how nicely the new one shifts; the money you'll save on chiropractic treatments alone will pay for the new car. And no more worrying about when that duct tape on the radiator hose is finally going to give out.

There have been a lot of "under the hood" issues here at bf.c for quite some time now. The major new update may have a few little detail differences, but, overall, it's gonna be a really good thing.

One problem not yet mentioned is that there is no easy way to navigate out of a thread and back to the sub-forum's index page unless you want to go to the previous or next thread, which is not always the case, at least not for me. No biggie on one page threads, as you can just use the browser's back button. Bit of a PITA on thread's you've posted a reply to, and those where you've read through several pages.

I agree with Gollnick, people need to give this a chance...this software is really good when you give it a chance.

Looks like it is now called Settings, and the link is up in the top right hand corner in between My Profile & Log Out. :)

perhaps you could explain why it's better?

i spent a month on a forum that was configured to the default, and they didn't bother to do anything with it, and said "you know what? life is too short to deal with an interface that the 1980s wants back" and i left. yuck. my biggest complaint is that they displayed less information and more gaudy colors that didn't add to anything.

hopefully Spark will spend all his waking moments tweaking and fixing.

i esp hate the icons, the color choices... they have taken me a long time to get used to on another forum. too large, look the same, they just don't pop.

that said, Spark is working on it, so... what am i to do but play in the April 1st snow? hah.

Being new to the forum (3 days) and not really having a chance to get familiar (and sentimental) with the old layout, I am probably in a good place to comment.

This is better and easier to navigate. One thing that is a bit cramped is the main forum index, specifically the way the sub forums are laid out bang bang bang one after the other left to right, personally would find it easier with a main forum and subs listed under it and each other top to bottom, while it may mean more scrolling it's easier on the brain. :)
Also noted some people who liked the quick forum links that used to exist at the top of the page, must admit they were a pretty good idea and wouldn't be to hard to re create on the link bar alongside 'HOME' 'FORUM" BLOGS' and 'WHATS NEW' section links.

Much better:thumbup::thumbup:

The quick navigation drop down doesn't work on my iPad. It pops up but I cannot scroll the list. The whole window wants to scroll, not the menu. This worked for me in the old version.

This is a big deal to me since I do most of my BFC reading on iPad. Spark, I know you're busy, but this probably impacts anyone who uses an iPad or iPhone to access the site. I'm surprised vBulletin would let an upgrade out the door without testing for something like this.

Seems like several areas of the forum are not supported for mobile viewing. Can only see a few areas on my iPhone.

any change riles people up...give it time
you'll see the new stuff is much more versatile, user friendly and stable for the long run...
it'll take some time to get it sorted out

I don't subscribe to the old car/new car analogy. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the old format. I liked it. Some may disagree. . . .

yeah I just tried on my E71 that I use to browse and read at work and its not working as well as i'd hoped...I figured with the mobile era well in effect they would incorp this into Vb.

security features the old one wont have is a big reason to upgrade, get someone that knows the flaws of the old software and they could cause serious server down time...a friend of mine just upgraded his forum to this same software for the same reason.

Yep this is like buying a new car, but this car has a clutch and a manual transmission. More work, but more performance, once getting used to it, this site should really go well
