New GEC #13 Congress series (Clerk, Speaker Jack and Whip)

I'd wondered how they differed from the earlier BF knife. The regular run has the pen blade opening from the pile side.

I wonder why there were no SFOs other than the whittlers? The BF version of the speaker jack is still the tops of that pattern, IMO.

Of course, we haven't really seen the stags yet...

True, but the thing about the Stag is that they will have no shields and on a pattern like this I think it's a flaw.

The Forum Knife having Rat-Tails really sets it apart, NS liners too. I crave a Clerk with Rat-Tails and all stainless construction:D:thumbup:

I was surprised to see long pulls on the northfield clerk. For some reason I just assumed they would have nicks across the board.
That ebony clerk looks quite nice!
(despite the cloud shield:D)

Some interesting texture with the jigging on this Whittler received today. Kind of gives it an aged look I guess. Pile side matches as well with the same thing, but a little less.

Laughing, because some flipper called those "tooling marks". I think it's entirely intentional and I like it.

The long pull on that wharncliffe just looks strange to me. (I'm also not too fond of the cloud shield in general, and on the Clerk it looks so close to that center pin!)

I had told myself that I wasn't going to buy more than one of any variation from this run (one Whittler, one Speaker Jack, etc.), but even though I had already bought a Muslin Micarta Whittler, I couldn't resist this one. :D

This is the color of jigged bone I was really hoping for on the Tidioute Speaker Jack (based on the preview drawing).

Stately looking knife, but I'm going to hold out for Tidioute version.

I have a question for the "in the know" folks here. I have developed an affection for smooth oiled bone. On the upcoming clerk in smooth bone....is the writing etched? engraved somehow? or is it printed. I guess what I'm getting at could it be easily removed? Gently sanded off? I would really like to have one in smooth bone without the writing. What do you think?
Thanks all, and take care,
Rick

My muslin whittler arrived today, everything perfect except perhaps the centre spacer being a touch proud when closed. It sits flush with the main blade open. I originally thought I'd be rushing to sand it flush but now that I have it it's not bothering me, yet, perhaps never we'll see. I also thought I'd wait and see about having two pen blades. Nope decided on turning one into a mini clip blade right away. Turned out great, imo. Works great to clean out some glue I had trapped under my nail!

Is anyone noticing a slight finishing difference between the Muslin, Jigged, and Ebony? seems like there is a progressive, but slight, improvement as the the knives move through the cover material. For example the bolster on the Muslin is a little more sharp and less polished than the Jigged or Ebony. Since I have one of each they will all likely become users but I'm inclined to take the Muslin to my fine stones and do some smoothing of the bolsters.

On GEC website , they say that the handles will be Laser Engraved .

Got my speaker jack. I like it pretty well but am very bothered by one thing, the snap is quite frankly terrible. The blades hardly close on their own. I think some more working it in and flushing out may get it to an acceptable amount, but we'll see. At least it looks really nice.

Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Paul, based on some earlier posts, I was a little worried about that myself. My red speaker has pretty good snap tho, thank goodness. I have a couple more coming so hopefully my luck holds.

If the flushing doesn't work, I would probably send it in for warranty repair.

Very Cool Looking Peech Seed Jigged Whittler btb0. I had a Red Jigged bone Version reserved but then got an opportunity to buy one of these. Sadly I didn't have the cash at the time to buy both so I had to pick witch one I wanted most. I chose the Peech Seed American Whittler and after seeing your photos I'm sure I made the right choice for me anyways. :D

Yessir, I have the same problem with my red Speaker jack too. The main blade basically has no snap and the small has what seems like intermittent snap. I tried washing the joints out and applying some oil but it didn't make much difference. When my other speakers arrive I'll see what their snap is like then probably send the ones with no snap back to GEC... The whittlers that I've received, on the other hand, all have darn near perfect f&f.

Interesting - my 61 has the best snap of any knife in my collection- a fact I had put down to the reverse curve in the backsprings on a congress knife. Guess that isn't the case.

The less-polished/satin finish on the bolsters (and shield) of the Muslin Micarta is intentional. GEC occasionally uses this finish on the bolsters/shield of Micarta-handled knives.

The main blade on my jigged bone Speaker Jack had a soft close at first, but after carrying and coon-fingering it for a day, it snaps closed just fine.

Thanks, it's definitely one of the best-looking from this run so far (at least in my opinion). I do prefer the satin finished blades on the Tidioute offerings, though, so I'm happy I was able to get one of each.

GEC often changes things. The Production Schedule has a Smooth Ivory Bone and a Muslin Micarta listed for the Tidioute Clerk. But the pictures have a muslin micarta and a rust red bone - neither with any etching. And at this point, it looks like they're finishing up with the Clerks and getting ready to move onto assembling the Whips.

So, I infer there's not going to be a smooth ivory bone and there's not going to be any etching. (Unless there's some product in their shop they didn't take pictures of, or it's something coming later.)

That's strange. The f&f on mine is near perfect except the snap. They did very well on the wraparound spring for the pen blade, nice touch. The jigging is great as well.
