New GEC #13 Congress series (Clerk, Speaker Jack and Whip)

AL : I think your dye job looks better than the Rust Red . What color dye did you use ?? I am not sure that you will ever get it to looks as good as your Old Case Reds . Even Case has not been able to get back to that . I have often wondered if what Case used back then was out-lawed by the EPA . How does your Re-Dyed 13 look side by side with one of your Cases ??? Do you think buffing the heck out of the 13 will give a little Pocket Worn and Shine look that the Cases do ???
I also intended to comment on your verrrry nice 61 Wharncliffe . Another knife that I should have bought .

Harry

Gorgeous set, Alan. The ebony speaker jacks have a classic look to them. Tempting.:thumbup:

The Muslin Whip seems to have claimed my pocket since I got it.

Thanks Dean: That's a nice shot you posted there. I actually forgot my second stag whip, I had in my pocket when I took that picture :D

Here ya go, Harry and thanks. I made a maroon dye by diluting dark brown.

It was the FDA that was responsible for the old red dye's demise. Even red M&Ms did not escape their grasp... until they decided they were mistaken a few years later. I forget which dye numbers they considered toxic, but evidently Case used a couple of red dyes that FDA declared toxic.

I agree. That's a fine set of 13s, Alan.

Dean, the picture of your Muslin Micarta Whip really brings out the elegance of the pattern.

It is hard for me to see much difference in the colors in your photo . I expect that you may see more of a difference with the naked eye . I think you have nailed it pretty well though Al. Close enough that if I had one of the Rust Red ones , I would sure as heck try it . Thanks for the comparison my friend .

I didn't notice the pixels on my office knife until I saw the pictures in here so I had to go grab the knife, get under some good light, take off my glasses, look very closely and then I could barely tell.

Monday, I have to schedule an eye exam.

Nice Shot and very nice Group , but aren't you missing some ??????
Which one is your favorite so far my friend .

Harry

I missed the second Stag Whip which was in my pocket when I took the photo:)

Also; my Office Knife just arrived today. It's pretty cool.

It's a toss up right now between the Whip and the Ebony Speakers. I have two of each. So, I have a friend I think would like a nice knife. Might just give him one. Don't care for the whittler too much. It's nice but just not me.

But you need one for each day of the week, right? ;)

I think your effort is remarkable The 'new' colour looks very appealing and bear in mind that the CASE knife goes smooth into the bolsters, whereas the GEC takes the jigging into the bolsters. Not only is this superior but it means it will not show such a polished, burnished 'glow' as the CASE does. Thus the CASE Red colour will appear more enhanced but with a bit of carry, oil & grime the GEC will soon take on a fine lustre, I suspect.

I've heard about this toxic dye reason before, but when did it occur as an FDA edict? I have an 1998 CASE Mini Copperlock in Old Pocket Worn Bone that's a VERY nice dark red shade. GEC's Rust Red 14 is a good dark colour, Böker manage some good stuff too and Queen QCCC from this century. Whereas CASE's contemporary efforts are Strawberry to Pink at best with albino areas near the bolsters. That's why I wonder if it is the FDA factor, I think CASE just dye their bone in general, less effectively or at least very patchily ?

Regards, Will

Some beautiful stag, Alan & Alan :) and Harry!

ALLHSS, I love the Office Knife. I don't expect anyone (but us knuts on here) to look at the laser engraving thru a 10x loupe! :D

Didn't think to take Before pics... catfish & bream blood patina. And my homebrew dye job. I was shooting for the old Case XX Redbone color.

Nice dye job, AL! I could've gone a little lighter on the dark brown, myself. I was shooting for something between your result and mine, although I'm not unhappy with it. (It's more of a dark dark brown in person than black as it appears in the photos).

Just received my 2 Whips . One had a Whip Button with it and the other one did not . Random insert I guess . The one shown in the top position is always the same one .

Great photos Harry, thank you. May I ask what name GEC gives these two types of covers?

These were "Sambar Stag". There are small inferences as to why they were not labeled Natural Stag even though they were not burnt.
