New GEC #13 Congress series (Clerk, Speaker Jack and Whip)

Those BladeForums 13s from 2013 are stunning... so clean, and the fluted bolsters look right at home on this pattern.

They really are & I hate I passed on it. I recall being turned off by the plain white micarta at the time, but they really turned out great and I like it having the pen blade in front.

Can anyone with the Whip measure the blade length and the cutting edge length of the blade? I ask as various sites have the Whittler and Whip both having three inch blades, but that's clearly incorrect with the obvious length difference between them.

Any info would be much appreciated.

I only picked up a whittler, I've been wanting a whittler for some time now. I'm not concerned about the length of the main as I got it to pair with a my Rat1 in d2 so I'm covered for a longer blade. Also for my uses, the main is a good length for a straight edge, just right for opening packages, toys for the kids, etc. I find the width of the handle combined with taper due to the splitback makes for a very comfortable grip. As far as the rub is concerned, doesn't factor in for me as it's a user, as are all my knives and it doesn't impede function. My only "problem" was I couldn't figure out any good reason to have 2 pen blades? I immediately turned one onto a tiny clip point. It turned out just right for cleaning glue out from under my nail which became necessary just hours after I made the change!

Whip - blade length = 2 15/16" ; cutting edge = 2 5/8"

I may be in the minority, but I believe GEC got it right with the Whittler's sheepsfoot blade. Maybe could've been a hair longer, but there's not much room to nest between the two secondary blades. It's short compared to the 13 Jack, but I think it fits the pattern.

Now, if you want to see short :).... 13 Congress Whittler compared to the 61 Congress pen

and here's a 13/61 Wharncliffe comparison

I really like the the 61 Wharncliffe, but I like the 13 Clerk better... my favorite of the recent bunch!

The thing that has me really kicking myself is that I passed on one and they were available long after the release.

Not sure how but in the frenzy I ended up with 3 whips, 2 clerks, 1 speaker, and 2 whittlers...

Can't see your picture. But I contacted GEC and they were cool about it. They insisted I send it in instead of trying to file the kick myself (voids warranty).

I emailed them about the pen blades being proud on my whittler. As always, Chris was very courteous and helpful. GEC has great service. It got there today. I'm just wondering how they'll drop the tips without making the nail nicks too low... I'm hoping they add little easy open notches like on the Clerk.

Everything about that 61 wharncliffe is great.

I don't mind the length on the whittler sheepfoot. I think it fits for the job description of a whittler. I actually thought I was buying a Clerk when I bought my Whittler (totally my fault, not the dealer) but am planning on keeping it because it's my only whittler and a very cool pattern. Might make one of the pen blades a coping.

Anyone else surprised by how pixelated and not crisp the laser etching is? It's not too noticeable from arm length, but close up it is very noticeable. I still think the etch is a great idea, and I love everything else about the knife (bone color, pull and snap on the blades, fitting/construction) but I wish it was closer to the look of engraving. Still a winner!

Alhss, I was surprised at the pixalization of the script too. When I zoom in on your image it looks like there's a few extra laser shots outside of the script. I wonder how this was done pre lasers? Was it branded somehow?

There are, and that's what I'm most disappointed with. The pixelation is workable, and could even be fixed by a good engraver, but those dots outside the script can't be fixed as far as I know.

I'd imagine it was just engraved, Scrimshaw style. I

Wow. That looks terrible. Might have been better to call it an Office Knife but just went without the engraving. At least the rest of the knife (F&F wise) is solid.
