New GEC #48 with Wharncliffe blade?

The Wharncliffe blade sits low enough that it isn't bad to dig into your hand.

Using it for long periods of time might make it more noticeable.

How does the knife feel in hand with the clip blade open? I held a 74 trapper before and disliked the way the Wharncliffe blade dug into my hand. I really like the looks of this knife but want to becomfortable using it. Thanks!

Mine just arrived today, but I've been handling it with minor tasks with the clip open and wharnie closed (and vice versa) and it feels fine to me.

Pistonsandgears - that blackwood is a beauty.

Thanks for the great pictures, Trand, and especially for including this last shot-- one I always appreciate seeing when trying to wrap my mind around the stag on a given knife. (In which 3rd down would be my pick, but not necessarily a shoo-in given the appearance of the others. Glad you don't have to choose...? ;))

That's one of the best pictures of Autumn Gold I've seen. :)

~ P.

No problem P. I too agree it would be the most pocketable followed by #1 which is thicker but uniform. I don't carry much stag because I like it to be thin in the pocket and relatively uniform. I sanded down a prominent hump on my #48 jack that I've been carrying and now its more comfortable both in pocket and in hand.

This is the only possible issue that has been keeping me from picking one up. I also tried out the 74 trapper and did not like it for the same reasons. I wish the made a single blade wharnflife 48!

This thread drove me over the edge today. #48 with wharnie in autumn gold on the way!!!! Looks to be my perfect edc

My-o-My, look what the mailman brought today!
(dealer photo, until I get my own)

Thanks Trand! I went browsing at Derrick's for a Blackwood because I waited too long to get one from Mike, and the stag on this one just jumped out and grabbed me..... Looks like beans and rice for a few days, but it was worth it ;)

Edited to add a couple of my own poor photos:

Nice set, now the real tricky question how do you decide which one gets carried?

I haven't been able to decide yet. :o I'll probably be adding about 2-3 of them, along with the DE jack, to my rotation of users.

The backside looks great too Russell!! Nicely matched :)

Wow Trand, those are all lookers! I love the cloud shield on the Blackwoods, and the color on the Autumn is awesome! When it comes to stag, well, those are all amazing and my scale of choice when I can afford it ;)

Is that #02 on one of the Naturals? Congrats!

Thanks Sonnemann, I just happened to dumb-luck my way into it. It got my attention right away, that's for sure :D

I pretty much shot my knife budget this month buying this # 55 so I'll probably have to resort to the "poor man's"
#48 improvised trapper.

I don't know if it is just the lighting but those Autumn Gold knives look great.
Are they a bit different than GECs typical Autumn Gold jigged?

I edited my previous post. The jigging on mine is GREAT by any standard--not quite what I expected, and probably more in line with their standard pattern, but I can't really complain about this beautiful knife.

My ugly picture doesn't do it justice, scroll up and look at ddml and Smithhammer's again :)

Your picture looks nice but different and more muted than DDML and Smithhammers photos. Their photos seem to portray Autumn Gold Jig as having more contrast and brighter golden orange highlights. Smithhammers photo almost appears flame like to my eyes.
Which photos do you think are more true to life?
I know lighting , camera, and post processing can have a big impact on photos

If I could change one thing about mine I would give it the same pull as my Eureka Jack, which has in my opinion the perfect pull for a slipjoint.

All the differences you listed plus changes in density in bone and how it takes the dye can all affect the color. Here's mine but my camera is set on outdoors pics which makes the color pop a bit. They were also oiled before taking the pic and haven't seen any pocket wear. It looks like Steve's has already seen some pocket time. The color is pretty accurate for mine though.

Thanks for the photos. Looks very nice. Hopefully I will be getting one very soon.
