New GEC #48 with Wharncliffe blade?

So, like, take a picture of your pocket or something?

(I'm especially looking forward to seeing the Autumn Golds, though I imagine they are all going to look oh so fine.)

This is the best I could do with recent demands on my time, and the rainy weather:

The color of the bone is vibrant. The jigging is deep and very three-dimensional.

Fit and finish is very good. The clip blade is slightly underbladed whereas the wharncliff spine is perfectly flush with the backspring. Absolutely not an issue at all but it did not escape notice. There's a gap under the shield due to the deep jigging; I could slide a needle under there (but why would I do that?).

The "flaws" are absolutely niggling things. Negligible. This is as perfect as they come. Blades rock solid, no wiggle, centered.

It is basically a finely finished Old Timer 94OT with a wharncliffe instead of the spey. I have the 94OT on loan from klineh and the GEC is just slightly slimmer because of the sleek bone covers vs. the slightly bulbous covers of the OT. Also, neither blade is underbladed on the OT (fwiw).

Wonderful knife. I've been waiting for this particular configuration. I haven't really put the knife through its paces (so far I've only cut tape as I opened a box) but I think the comfort of the knife will not be an issue. The slimness of the frame allows you to use the clip blade without being bothered by the spine of the wharncliffe, which was my primary concern. The closed knife is a good fit for the right front pocket. A little outsized for watch pocket carry.

More thoughts later and maybe a direct photo comparison with the Old Timer trapper if there's interest.

Excellent comparison with the Old Timer.

I have several Schrade Trappers and they are very close.

I believe GEC has their 1095 a little harder than Schrade based on sharpening experiences.

Does anyone know the Rockwell on both?

Skinner, I've seen 58 given as the number for both, but the GEC seems a little harder to me, too.

Total n00b question. Does metal mellow out with time? As in, does it get softer? I can't imagine this is the case, but I'm a poor student of metallurgy.

It is my experience that Schrade steel feels softer, too.

Total derail, I know.

Thanks! -- Good enough to see the proportions of the jigging to the knife, which is what I was primarily interested in. I've liked most of GEC's Autumn Gold to date, and this is no exception.

I enjoy knife comparisons very much, so if your time and inclination coincide I'd love to see pictures and hear more of your impressions.

The rest of mine came in this morning and I am happy!!! Hopefully some pics later today. I really think that if you're still debating about getting one and haven't yet, stop and order right now!!

Here's the rest... African Blackwood, Autumn Gold jigged bone, Burnt Stag, and Natural Stag. These are my first with GEC Natural stag.

Yowza - that's quite a package! Those all arrived at one time?!?

I went with autumn gold this round, but the blackwood sure looks nice too.

Yep. They were supposed to come in yesterday and I posted such on Tuesday night. So, of course, they were delayed a day :o Here's the pile sides of the stags and thickness.

Every single cover material looks great on this run.
Not a dud in the bunch.

This is going to be a very popular knife for GEC. I hope they run with it! I would have bought more but some jackwagon in DC is getting into my pocket!

Thanks for the great pictures, Trand, and especially for including this last shot-- one I always appreciate seeing when trying to wrap my mind around the stag on a given knife. (In which 3rd down would be my pick, but not necessarily a shoo-in given the appearance of the others. Glad you don't have to choose...? ;))

Indeed. This is the best 'autumn gold' I've seen:

It looks like a nice flame job on a 33 Ford.

It could probably stave off hypothermia in a pinch. :D

Seriously though, it's a knife I've desired for a long time. I'm glad to see GEC is finally making it, and they have definitely done an excellent job with these. Looking forward to seeing the diamond #48s!

How does the knife feel in hand with the clip blade open? I held a 74 trapper before and disliked the way the Wharncliffe blade dug into my hand. I really like the looks of this knife but want to becomfortable using it. Thanks!

It's way more comfortable than the 74 but not perfect. I'm still waiting on the SFO Jack edition for just this reason, but I'll be carrying this one too, for sure. For perspective, I do not carry the 2013 BF knife (a 74 pattern) because it is too uncomfortable.
