New guy from France knife contest

Dear New Guy From France,

(Honest, in America that name is a sign of affection and welcome.) There is mention here of a Talonite knife with titanium sides and many holes in the titanium. That is a Tom Mayo knife and I am very proud to say that I have one in my pocket as I type. There are two problems in getting a knife from Tom Mayo. 1. They are so beautiful that you don't want to use them. 2. Tom Mayo is a genuinely nice guy and seems to love everybody. It is hard to get him to take as much money for one of his knives as he should get. Personally I have a limited budget and like a good deal on knives but knife makers should make a good living also.

Hi New Guy! Don't worry about Talonite being soft - I've chopped with it many times and never deformed an edge!

I TOO AM FROM RAMULAC, where Talonite is for dipping into the afore mentioned French stuff. Do not tell.

There once was this New Guy from France,
With knives in the pockets of his pants.
I say "Sharp and stainless, right?
Then you need Talonite."
I'm serious... just give it a chance.

Greetings,
This place is a great recource for any information regarding knives. If you have any questions ask. You'll get lots of help. Alos the search function is a great way to get answers and information without having to ask. Look out for the Exchange area:) I always seem to be money I don't have in there.

Bonjour, Marsot! Let me join everyone else in welcoming you to the Forums. I think you’ll like it here…it’s an incredible resource for anyone who shares our strange obsession with sharp, pointy objects ;). Lots of good advice has already been offered; some of the best is the recommendation to become familiar with the “search” function…there’s a wealth of information in the older posts. This will also spare you some criticism from some of our crustier members :p…

I can vouch for the fact that Tom Walz is on the level with regard to his Talonite contests here on the Forums…I was fortunate enough to win one of his contests a few months ago :D. Thanks to Tom’s generosity, I’m the proud owner of the beautifully crafted Paul Reynold’s gent’s folder shown below (in Talonite, of course). This knife has been a part of by daily carry rotation for a while and I can assure you that Talonite is an exceptional blade material for this type of knife. Its cutting performance has been excellent, and it’s never needed more than a quick touch up on my sharpening stones (and that very rarely). Good stuff! (By the way Tom, please exclude me from the current contest…I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to take advantage of your generosity again :)).

Take care, and enjoy the Forums!

Jim

Marsot,

Welcome to BFC! That stands for B.ackout F.ast C.ahoona!! Leave now if you want to have any money in the future. Don't say we didn't warn you.
Oh, and Talonite is great for slicers and not so good for choppers.

Welcome Marsot! You'll have fun and learn a lot here. I'm sure you will teach us a lot also. Opinel and Sabatier are the only French knives I know. Well that's not exactly true. I know of Fred Perrin and have see pictures of his work but never handled one.

Okay Monsieur, I say Talonite Schmalonite.

If you are like about 90% of the knife addicts on this forum, you will find that Talonite opens envelopes as well if not better than "surgical stainless steel".

Use a carbon steel Opinel (I have 4 of them, keep it oiled and sharp and forget you ever found this website. I have burned up over $400 in the last three months padding my already under-utilized knife "collection".

Now if I can just get Rob to make a Talonite corkscrew for a custom Laguiole wine opener!

Bonjour Marsot! I'll have to agree with some of the others, a tnt by Tom Mayo with talonite blade, would be way cool. Good luck with finding a good knife. This place is full of knowledgeable people who are always willing to share their information.

Welcome to Blade Forums!

DD

Thanks Tom Walz, for a fun contest, and for making a new member welcome. It's dignitaries like you who make this place such a great hang-out.

Bonjour Monsieur Marsot! J'ai quelque mots tres sage pour vous: presque tout le monde cherche la vache!

Ok, that exhausted all the French I retained from school. Wonder how accurate it was . . . anyway, welcome to the forums! I think the best advice is to never take things personally - because now that you have posted here, you WILL post again, and you WILL read posts you disagree with, and you WILL think that certain other posters are complete boobs (tete du frommage?), and you may feel that they should be alerted to this fact for their own benefit and edification . . . BUT I generally try to refrain, at least for a while, because someone else will almost certainly do so.
Enjoy! There's so much information and entertainment here! And leave your wallet at home, or at least in another room, otherwise you'll soon be rich in knives but poor in cash - and it's hard to barter knives for food & gas, even in France.

Comment allez vous New Guy from France...you've come to the right place to fuel your knowledge of knives and to get news ones....

While I am of the opinion that the balisong design is originally French and the oldest example I am aware of is in a museum in France, the only one in the world with a Talonite blade was made by Rob Simonich.
