Attention New measures to stop scams and dishonest behavior in the Exchange

The recent hacked account did send me a timestamp with user name and bladeforums written on the pic, he photoshopped it. Just a heads up that they will still photoshop. However, I used a site that tells you if a picture has been photoshopped and uploaded the picture… it confirmed it appeared doctored.
Was it photoshopped to appear handwritten? Can you share a photo? I wasn’t aware time stamps could be so easily faked.

Edit: I’m glad you got wind of the scam before sending money!

Of all the issues that have kept me from any selling and hardly any buying I had no idea there is the threat of pics being photoshopped. Is there any built in software that could auto flag altered pics submitted in the exchange?

I always kept the post the exact same except for marking out (striking through) the price and placing sold on it. I keep the prices for integrity-wise for others to see what I sold it for.

I know I also provide step by step packing pictures with label and drop off receipt to help buyer keep track. I made be going over board but its to protect myself as well on this part.

I do hate to say this, but would there be a way to make the Knife Exchange private unless you have a paid subscription? Just from what I have gathered looking at some of the selling posts, and now including mine, sellers are now having to put on there that we will not directly email you or text you. I might change mine to say I will only reply to someone that has replied they have DM'd me in the post and I will reply directly this way.

Hey now we can all see what knives sell for so that it’s not a mystery game when listing our own.
Sounds good to me!

In Reddit Knife Swap these rules have been in place and they have many more scammers than BF… this will help quite a bit I think.

The flaccid Spyderco post cracks me up.. but they have a point. You mods are on high alert all the time. Good work.

Just a thought, if you don't want the price to show indefinitely, use a photo sharing site and write the price on the note in the photo. When you delete the pic from the sharing site, it will disappear from Bladeforums.

What's wrong with the price showing indefinitely though? I feel like if someone is reselling a knife they bought from here at a 300% markup. The buyer has a right to know the price history of the previous sale post. That’s the way I see it

Nothing wrong with that to me. Just sharing.👍

Yeah it’s so odd to me that it’s a norm here on BF to delete prices… I did it for a while too because everyone else did. Now I leave it and just put SOLD beside it. It is usually lower than what’s listed anyway - after getting PM’s with offers. It’s nice to know a range of what knives are worth.

I also started adding who purchased the blade under the strikethrough price with it being SOLD beside pricing. Unless the buyer wants to be left anonymous then I will just mark Sold.

I think the price should be required to be typed into the forum post for this specific reason. Using pictures to circumvent the rules negates not allowing post edits and will empower scammers to delete pictures after they’ve been caught.

The gold membership that's required to sell comes with picture hosting, if it is made a rule that sales pics have to be hosted locally it would solve that problem and make the pics a permanent record. That can be handy if a dispute about the condition occurs.

I'm totally for this! I really only use imgur when I need to show videos cause my videos never upload on the post correctly. I feel like most that do use other sources to upload pictures or videos cause you can mass post them vs when you post the photos on here, you have to do it in a way that it is one by one unless I have been doing it wrong or have not figured out how to do it better 🤣. plus I'm trying to figure out how people take such great pictures. My pictures are always grainy and look like I used an old Nokia 😂

You would have to disable to ability to delete your own photos in that case.

Yeah, make the pics permanent ... also force users to note on the picture that Paypal FF is required. :)
