Attention New measures to stop scams and dishonest behavior in the Exchange

do these new rules apply to knifemakers and dealers?
One of the accounts which was hacked was a knifemaker account. So if someone with a knifemaker account is selling a regular knife, then yes, he absolutely needs to prove he has the knife.

But if it's a knife that maker has made, I think it's going to be pretty obvious. So in my unofficial opinion, he does not need to post that in those sales threads.

As for dealers, the problems have arisen when a regular type member uses the same email or user name with the same password on multiple sites, then one of the sites gets hacked and the user data is exposed. The hacker procures that data, then uses it to log into other sites. I don't expect to see a commercial account holder making such boneheaded security errors. My unofficial opinion, is that the commercial accounts don't need to do this.

The above opinions are my thoughts on how I will apply the rules until or unless Spark says otherwise.

Haha good thing I use HideMyEmail from Apple. Have a different email for every site I use and password included.

If you don't have iCloud. You could use Firefox relay

Has anyone noticed the posting time being off? Just listed a knife and the second I posted the listing, post time said "19 minutes ago". Does this cut into the 30 minute edit rule?

Maybe I'm not seeing things correctly, but to my eye, it looks like FS thread posts can still be edited despite the new time limits to do so.

ETA: Here is just a random FS thread that shows what I am talking about:

Only PAID MEMBERS should have privilege for access to the Knife Exchange.

OR

All members can view the Knife Exchange but you have to be a paid member to respond to any posts. If you can afford to buy a knife ... you should be able to pony up at least 10 bucks.

Yes, it looks like I'm able to change my post also. I didn't per the rules but I could so everyone else could also.

You can also force all to change their PW every 90 days like enterprises do, however inconvenient it may be.
That would definitely reduce the number of hacked accounts.

I’m also all for only paid members accessing the sales area.

Going to miss editing my sales threads to keep them clean and updated ☹️

I don't understand the recommendation against F&F. PayPal won't protect knife sales, so there is no protection from G&S.

And I'm selling knives that I purchased with after-tax money -- and paid sales tax -- and usually selling them for a loss. But if I sell G&S, I have to pay income tax on the full amount of the sale, even though it's a loss. I never kept records of my past purchases, so I can't file some kind complicated tax form.

The point of feedback is to see that people have been keeping their word on selling.

G&S absolutely protects with knife sales. I've gotten my money back twice with G&S when sellers flaked, and PayPal knew what the item was in both cases. There are plenty of threads in GBU saying the same. There are legitimate dealers that take PayPal, as well, and of course there you are covered, too.

I agree.
I always ask for FF or Zelle and with my sales history I have no problem getting it.
I won’t take GS because of taxes… that’s a whole ‘nother thread. I’m not making money on watches/knives/gear… I can tell you that at almost 20 years I’ve lost a lot of money in my hobbies… ask my wife!

Edit- I also have a complete sales post with lots of pics.. I think that should be required if you’re going to pay someone FF. I hate sales post with next to no info and one crappy pic.

We don't blanket prohibit F&F because it's your choice whether you want to choose to forgo buyer protection as a buyer, and your own risk / reward as a seller. However, with scammers gaining access to people's accounts via site breaches elsewhere due to folks recycling their passwords... that's a risk that we recommend people avoid. We're doing what we can to try and mitigate that risk, but you guys have to do your part as well.

Can I use a link to the video? Can I post a picture with the date/username in the comments? Thanks!

This is what makes it so difficult. They’re controlling known accounts with years of positive feedback, and are even going through and reading posts and messages in the account to get a feel for how the user typed and what they’re doing or selling.

They almost got me on a custom knife I was having made but what threw me off was the knife maker asked for a rushed payment late at night because of “material costs”. I thought it was odd so I didn’t respond, but the scammer knew I was working with this member to have a knife made and tried to get me to pay him through DM.
