New Run of No. 15s (Beer Scout and Otherwise)

These photos of the bone make it look better than GECs photos did, but every time I look at that bone I think of dyeing it darker. It would look so good in dark brown.

EDIT and I'm gonna do it! knife inbound.

Good decision I believe. Looking forward to the pics:thumbup:

I just received my maroon micarta beer scout in the mail. It's my first beer scout, and it's beautiful, but the first thing I noticed when I opened it is that the blade is canted to the left. I know that it probably won't affect the functionality of the knife, but now that I've seen it, I can't unsee it and it's really bugging me. Is this normal?

IMHO, that's absolutely nothing to fret over. The blade may have not been ground exact at the tang and then was krinked to make it sit center in the blade well. I guess your mileage will vary, but that's pretty minor to me. I don't think I'd even think twice about it. Take that with a grain of salt though. I don't look at these knives under a microscope and considering that I've had probably close to 200 GEC made knives pass through my hands, a krinked blade is one of the last things I tend to notice. What I find important is the action of the blades/springs and the overall tightness of construction. The gems have what I call watertight springs, where you can hold them up to sunlight and not see any gaps. Most of the rest is inconsequential, to me at least. If it bothers you that much, return it for another. These knives aren't made by computers so there's idiosyncrasies with each one. That's part of the charm.

Looking forward to seeing this. I like the color, but I'm curious to see what it'll look like dyed a bit darker.

What Draggat said, the blade's likely been krinked to center it when the blade is closed. Use the fool out of it, many of my favorites look the same way.

Thanks guys. I'm relatively new to traditional knives, so this threw me off a bit. The blade is more or less centered when closed. Now that I know it's relatively normal I think I can live with it. Thanks for the reassurance!

You have a fantastic knife, I hope with use a bond will form:thumbup:

Roll out the barrel, we'll have a barrel of fun

I really like this basic pattern & would probably buy every version if I could. This Beer Scout, with beer barrel oak scales, absolutely was a must buy for me. Paid for it yesterday and now I'm waiting. ....

X2 did a pre-order for one also to keep my Maroon macarta company 😎

All these people anxious to get them that just pre-ordered...

I think I clicked the button on all four back in April! It's been a long wait.

The fit and finish on my Beer scout is a little better. Super sharp! The pull on the blade and the cap lifter are a lol stronger out of the tube too. Glad I finally got a crown lifter and a beer scout!!

Got my Golden Ale Jigged Bone in the mail today, just waiting on that Beer Barrel Oak to ship now. So far my favorite is the Maroon Micarta, but we'll see if I feel the same when the oak arrives. :D

I know someone mentioned this a while back (can't remember if it was in this thread or another), but it does seem that someone got a bit sloppy in the sharpening department over at GEC on this run. Both my Antique Yellow Crown Lifter and my Golden Ale Beer Scout came with wavy, uneven bevels. One spot on the pile side of the blade on my Golden Ale looks like someone tried to give it a convex edge (but only on about 1/3 of the blade). It just looks like someone wasn't paying attention or was doing the job in a rush. :(

It's not the end of the world, nothing a couple minutes on a sharpening stone can't remedy, but it is a bit disappointing as GEC normally does a better job than this.

dang it!

So much lust got built up I just ordered a draft beer acrylic. I have a hard time justifying purchases for items 1/5 of the price this is, and now I rushed the purchase not even thinking twice about how much it cost lol!
