New Run of No. 15s (Beer Scout and Otherwise)

Ive got a little char on mine haha. Im very happy with it :)

Im interested in the charred version but will probably pass on it. I have my eye on too many others to buy doubles (or near doubles)

Here are two more pics. The first one shows the additional smaller wood grain-free spots on the pile side.

I got mine in today and took a few quick photos (sorry for the poor indoor lighting). Both sides look good in my opinion, but you can see an area on the pile side similar (I'm assuming) to what's on Travman's. I tried to capture how it changes with the light differently than the rest of the wood.

I don't think it looks bad at all, and it looks better in person than in photos. To me, I think the spot Travman's probably looks worse to us because it's right around that pin. One other thing I'll say is that I'm really impressed how smooth the covers are. They feel great!

I must say you guys and gals have me a little nervous on the beer barrel BC as mine should be here Saturday lol . At first I was just hoping I would have a pin now I'm hoping it doesn't come with covers that should be a second . I've had good luck with gec thus far and can only hope it continues . My Maroon Macarta is a fine example so my expectations " were " high .

My Bear scout has the same type of "defect". To me it looks like a variation in the grain. It definitely draws your eye to it.

I totally expected all of the Beer Barrel Oak knives to look like the charred when I preordered; like the Boker beer barrel knives you see in pictures. The basic oak run is nice and all, but definitely not what I thought they would be.

Same here. I'm not huge on Jacks, so I didn't preorder, but I was considering it thinking they'd come out like the charred ones.

i do believe the "defects" yall are pointing out are due to the oak being quarter sawn. it could have been sawn like that originally for the barrel or by GEC for the covers. this is a desirable and more expensive cut of wood. if the wood is stable i dont see how you could call it a defect and say it should be considered a second. thats just me though :) im a cabinet and furniture builder and character in wood is beautiful to me. some you use with certain pcs and some you save for a special or more fitting piece

eta: btb01 mentioned it changed with how you hold it to the light pretty much confirms to me that its quarter sawn

You may be right, but this does not change the end result, perhaps GEC forgot to make some pedagogy, as for anybody not in the secret, it looks like a flaw...

Also maybe if these "non defects" were shown in pictures on dealers websites it wouldn't be such a surprise for those who did or didn't get lucky .

Just to be clear, I wouldn't call the spot on the pile side of my knife a "defect," nor am I complaining about it. I don't know enough about wood to know the cause, but whatever it is, I feel certain it's a direct result, in some way or another, of this wood's previous life as a whiskey/beer barrel, which, after all, is what makes these covers so interesting! :D Like I said in my post before, in person it doesn't look bad at all. It gives the wood character. I like it.

If you're OK with it, that's all that matters. It'll most likely get worse blems than that on it over time if it's going to be a user. Enjoy your BS. My micarta BS has been in my pocket ever since I got it.

That would be nice. I like the dealers who show multiple pics of the actual knife I'm buying.

Personally, I like the knife. I would keep it and enjoy it. The grain in that oak is prettier than most I've seen.

These came out great! I was originally going to get oak but I have worked with it a lot in the past and was never thrilled with those lighter specks in the grain. That's why I go with micarta for most knives I can't buy in person there is much less deviation in how they look. I know plenty like the variety of natural materials and that's cool but I'll stick with what I know I will enjoy👍🏼

The current pic for these on KSF shows the same type of markings

This oak is recycled it would be expected to have irregularities. Otherwise why bother recycling a barrel at all?

The marks could be bruising from the process involved in making the barrel. I cant say more as I haven't seen them in person.

My knife was shipped back today. I was conflicted since it was such a good looking knife otherwise.

Yes. I always fall for the perfectly posed picture of the best representative of the batch. It is sort of like a dating site where the person you are hoping for is using a very favorable picture from 20 years ago.
