I totally expected all of the Beer Barrel Oak knives to look like the charred when I preordered; like the Boker beer barrel knives you see in pictures. The basic oak run is nice and all, but definitely not what I thought they would be.
You may be right, but this does not change the end result, perhaps GEC forgot to make some pedagogy, as for anybody not in the secret, it looks like a flaw...i do believe the "defects" yall are pointing out are due to the oak being quarter sawn. it could have been sawn like that originally for the barrel or by GEC for the covers. this is a desirable and more expensive cut of wood. if the wood is stable i dont see how you could call it a defect and say it should be considered a second. thats just me thoughim a cabinet and furniture builder and character in wood is beautiful to me. some you use with certain pcs and some you save for a special or more fitting piece
eta: btb01 mentioned it changed with how you hold it to the light pretty much confirms to me that its quarter sawn
Just to be clear, I wouldn't call the spot on the pile side of my knife a "defect," nor am I complaining about it. I don't know enough about wood to know the cause, but whatever it is, I feel certain it's a direct result, in some way or another, of this wood's previous life as a whiskey/beer barrel, which, after all, is what makes these covers so interesting!Like I said in my post before, in person it doesn't look bad at all. It gives the wood character. I like it.
Also maybe if these "non defects" were shown in pictures on dealers websites it wouldn't be such a surprise for those who did or didn't get lucky .

Absolutely and couldn't agree more 👍That would be nice. I like the dealers who show multiple pics of the actual knife I'm buying.

Yes. I always fall for the perfectly posed picture of the best representative of the batch. It is sort of like a dating site where the person you are hoping for is using a very favorable picture from 20 years ago. Also maybe if these "non defects" were shown in pictures on dealers websites it wouldn't be such a surprise for those who did or didn't get lucky .
