New Run of No. 15s (Beer Scout and Otherwise)

while, you are here, i have a question to ask. If i preorder the 2016 and buy something else, will that something else ship first? Or do I have to wait for the order to be complete? Some places have rules regarding preorders. Thanks!

PM'd you, thanks. (Yes is the short answer) :D

Another dumb question, is acrylic more like glass or plastic? I have never been able to find a straightforward comparison. Is it the same or similar to the material like an acrylic fish tank is made of?

It is a type of plastic.

In other news, after I saw the ebony 15s completed I switched my pre-order and should have one in my hands this week. I have other stuff in Micarta so decided to try something different.

The acrylic feels like an eyeglass frame. It's smooth, warms to touch quickly and very pleasant.

It is a resin with textile fibers, but it is made from polymers of acrylates. In regards to knife handle material, it will crack if not worked properly during production but once finished, it is about as wear resistant as any other plastic. It is, however, not quiet as shock resistant as say delrin, but close. I'm not sure if that helps but there are no dumb questions, here in the trad forum.

Edit....Loving the new 15s on schedule!

I don't think anything in the world sells out faster than a gec barlow. I hope they do another run of clip and spear single and two blade barehead jacks, I would be all over those variations:thumbup:

+1!
That was FAST!

Okay, after seeing the new cap lifters and in the antique yellow I'm very interested now!

I think the Draft Beer Acrylic is going to turn out great once it's polished up on a completed knife. Not quite was I was expecting, but I think it'll look good. Before seeing the in-progress photos on GEC's site (and above in this thread -- thanks, MrBitters), I was expecting something of a similar golden color, but with white streaks in it, rather than black.

I'm also very excited about the Boy's Knife/Crown Lifter in Antique Yellow Jigged Bone. That particular handle material from GEC always gets me.

I'm having second thoughts on getting the Beer Scout. The humidity where I'm at is such that my Buck 110's 420hc gets little spots of rust occasionally. I'm concerned about how much effort I'll have to put in to keep rust off of the 1095. I don't like patina on a knife, I just think steel should shine.
I recently got a Trestle Pines Grand Portage which is like a Beer Scout with CPM 154 stainless, so that's another factor.
Of Course the GP doesn't have the cool 'Beer Scout' shield. Another thing that bothers me is the BS is kind of expensive for only having 1095 steel. I understand that GEC blades have an automatic collector value about them so that would be a good reason I guess.

I live in a very humid gulf coast environment. Yes, I need to rub the GEC 1095 occasionally to remove spots, though I don't mind a patina. If you want shiny steel, carbon steel will probably bother you. I have found that I prefer the way carbon sharpens and holds and edge so I prefer it to even the best modern stainless steels. I just like the feel. The patina add character in my mind. I just personal preference, but FYI, your 1095 will not stay shiny unless you work at it.
