New ZT0550 Thread !!!

Great group you have there!
Any chance we could see a couple pics of the 551 next to the MPR?
Thanks for your time, and a BIG thank you to Thomas and Rick for this knife.

Alex

What the heck, since we're talking comparison shots......

Here is a shot of some fine titanium framelocks, including the 0551:thumbup: I couldn't be happier with this knife!

So I finally pulled out the camera and a few other Ti framelocks to take some shots. I'd like to take some in use shots, but I need a cameraman. Apparantly I need a cameraman to take my non action pics as well. Sorry for the not so good quality.

Hi Tony -

Sweet! Thanks for the pictures - I could look at these guys collections all day!

I like the "star" arrangement, I'll have to try to do one like that sometime.

I had a friend over today and I took a couple of shots of his SKD 360 PT alongside my 551 and the 350 I had just given to him for his birthday/Christmas present.

Here is a comparison shot of the butt of the 350 and the 360, showing the carbide nib on the 360 -

Thank you for the update, here's hoping there might be one with my name on it ;)

But...but...who else can we drive to the brink of insanity with our obsessive need for pics, info, and instant gratification? :D

In all seriousness, I hope the holidays go well for you personally and for the guys at Kershaw/ZT. I know things are crazy, and many of us appreciate the time you've spent/wasted on us and our forums.

...oh, and to keep this on-topic, since I never said it, I got #11.

You'll be fine, but know I'll come back with some new cool stuff to get your insanity level back to normal. :)

I've got serial 0101. I don't know if anybody else has this issue, but I quite literally cannot push the blade open with the thumb studs like how you would open a big and heavy blade like the Lionsteel SR-1(i.e. without flicking it open). No matter which direction I push(from the side or directly below), it doesn't budge an inch. When "flicking" it open I have to kind of snap my arm in a downward motion as if I were trying to open the knife with inertia alone.

Did I get one with a freakishly strong lockbar? Or is my thumb just weak:confused:?

I've been opening and closing it all day, and I thought it was starting to loosen up, but that was just the pivot screw loosening up. After I tightened that up with blue loctite, the blade stubbornly refused to open up again. Moving the blade open out of the detent makes it easy to open up with a casual and weak flick of the wrist.

This whole experience just leaves me with the impression that this knife would work

Could you be putting pressure on lockbar when opening?

Could you be putting pressure on lockbar when opening?
No sir. To be extra sure, I tried the same with my left hand. In theory the pressure should push the blade away from the detent, but opening is still tough as ever. I finally managed to push the blade open with my right hand just now, but it sure hurts. Hopefully though this is a sign of it breaking in. It DID take about a week or two for my Emerson Super Karambit's liner lock to stop sticking to the blade. Of course, now I'm not entirely sure if the "ball" part of the ball detent is titanium or some harder material.

Anyways, hope I get some more opportunity to use this baby at work tomorrow. Just need to stick a nice lanyard on the thing:thumbup:.

Have you checked pivot tension?

If its as stiff as you say that would be something i'd check first.

What Thomas meant is, when you release the lock with your thumb your index and middle finger naturally rest on the lock bar. You thumb ends up fighting opposing forces applied by your other fingers.

The ball detent appears to be stainless and should only cause resistance during the first 1/8in of the opening. After that it rides on the side of the blade until it drops off at the tang/lock face.

I hope to see you back here soon Thomas.Hope you & yours have a happy holiday season.

So,Besides the difference in the blade steel, what can I expect to be different of the 0550 vs the 0551?

I think my knife is just about perfect (although the bar does travel over about 75%). Blade is centered, no rust I can see, perfect fit and finish.

I did however damn near wear a blister on my thumb opening the knife last night. Turns out I'm putting some pressure on the lock bar. It opens nice and smooth left handed.

How are you guys with large hands managing a smooth right hand open using the Thumbstud? I don't find that I have room for my fingers.

I do use a middle finger-thumb pinch & push on the blade near the thumbstud that works well but it is a two step open as you have to readjust your thumb to finish the push on the thumb stud.

I think this knife is just great!!!

I've got #251 & it works fine. For those of you who have a problem with the "detent" theres a simple test to see if its too strong. There is a lot of blade to grap, just try opening with 2 hands. Is it very hard to open? If not the problem is where you are postioning your thumb when opening. Also you have to make sure not to put pressure on the intregal lock on the other side. On this folder the thumb studs are also the stop pins so there has to be a compromize on how far from the pivot it can be. I had a little difficulty when I first got mine and found out you have to push the thumb stud almost directly up, not at an angle.
I have a feeling that all the detent's are fine and the people who have problems opening the blade just have to experiment on different ways to position your hand. Someone mentioned moving the pocket clip to the pivot side so there could be more leverage.

Happy Holidays! to you and yours...

Thanx! for all you do...and endure.

Peace be with you,

~Gnarly
