That's a gutted Leatherman Blast, btw. The guy peened some brass tubes in it, to run the rubber tubes through. Here's someone else's solution to that:

Its starting to snow a little harder here. The kids and the new pup was gettin cabin fever so we went for a little roadtrip. We went to the Muscatatuck wildlife refuge. My family used to own a 500 acre farm there before the government bought the land.
The house my Dad was raised in was here at this trailhead.

We took our new puppy Sophie along. She doesn't like being on a leash.

You're not kidding. Roads absolutely suck, and since the municipalities refuse to use sand instead of salt, they're hands are tied. Too cold for salt to do anything right now.

I don't miss that stuff one bit. Be careful out there... the other drivers are often more dangerous than the conditions themselves.

We're taught how to drive in it so the municipalities don't waste all their money on salt and sand. ;)

I'm not buyin' that for a second. I've been around/through the Chitown area a few times... those people are maniacs, rain sleet snow or shine. I'd rather drive a riding lawnmower through a minefield than be anywhere near Chicago highways and byways. (OK, maybe I'm exaggerating just a little...)

I literally learned to drive on bad roads in horrible conditions - my Dad was funny that way; the type who also threatened to throw me out of the boat if I didn't jump, to see if I really knew how to swim - so winter driving in and of itself really don't scare me. I'm a very patient man when it comes to pushing around a couple tons of steel and horsepower in the snow/on the ice... too many other people don't seem to get that. It's always a hoot to see some moron scream past you in a blizzard... and come upon him ten minutes later when he's in the ditch looking stoopid  (not a hoot at all if someone gets hurt, of course.)

Ain't gonna happen. He whined at Vanderbilt. He whined in Denver. He whines in Chicago.

Team loyalties notwithstanding, I have just never been impressed with Cutler, and I'm pretty sure I never will be. Even in his women's NFL apparel commercial  he came off as a crybaby little twit.

Thanks for the solid advi... wait a minute :D

Yeah, sorry 'bout that. The workplace generally requires more finesse... but not always. Remember, while intense, sudden violence is very seldom the first option you should pursue... it's always an option :D

Looks like a good time was had by all.

I assume this is close to the former "Indiana Farm Colony for Feeble-Minded Youth", now owned by the Indiana National Guard and used as the Muskatatuck Urban Training Center? Visited there a couple of times for work. Driving through North Vernon was the first time I ever saw a vending machine filled with fishing bait on the sidewalk of a downtown. Cause you never can tell what time, day or night, that you might need some crickets or worms....

the tendency for a pup to try and chew on their leash is one of the reasons we use a short length of steel chain between collar and lead when training.
once the pup gets over that first 5 minutes of sheer panicked frenzy, things go better.
Once they start figuring out how to behave, we switch to a fairly thick "choke" chain -- as it's easier to get on and off and encourages good behaviors, like not pulling suddenly in an odd direction.

Look what the UPS guy dragged in! A Spyderco Chinook 3, which is one of my (many) grails. 4mm thick S30V steel blade, super-strong back lock, disigned by "master-at-arms" James A. Keating, and made only 20 minutes from where I live!

Don't give away the secrets! People need to experience a Chicago winter for themselves! Thunder snow, cars freezing to the road at red lights, the drivers, all of it!

I am not a Cutler fan, however I will admit he isn't a BAD player. I still think McCowan was much more impressive this year.

When did people get out of the habit of properly disciplining a child. I just got caught in the side of my head because this kid is acting out in the garage and throwing stuff.

Back in 10th grade, it took us an hour and a half to drive to school. Normally it would take 10 minutes. I biked to school a few times.

Go for it! Y'all have fun with that.

If we get to comparing winters, it's just going to turn into a pissing contest that no one can possibly win...

Except me. I win because I moved to the "Upper South" "Western Appalachia" "Humid SubTropical Climate" or whatever you want to call it, after 40 years in the Frozen got-dang Tundra, paying every dime I didn't have just to keep the furnace running and the pipes from freezing.

Down here the winters are incredibly short and really just late autumn blended into an earlier spring, with a brief period of "Oh, was that snow?" "Not really, never mind, it's gone now" that passes in a couple days.

Did I mention that my garden plot is still tillable and ready for a ton or two of manure, to get ready for next year? Ask my cousins in WI what they're doin' in their yards... Can't eat a snowman, baby.

And the summers are actually no worse than the sweating-your-guts-out-sitting-still, covered with skeeters summers of North-Central WI? They just stay the same, longer. With fewer skeeters, oddly enough. Oh, yeah.

East TN rocks. A person would have to have a whole lot of cash to convince me to move away from here.

Wait... no... East TN sucks. Don't ever move here. It's horrible here. Stay away.

Sometime soon I will need to learn a lot more about raising a pup. I've never done that before; all our beloved dogs were rescued by Miss Angie from pretty brutal, feral conditions and full-grown when I met them.

I suspect there's a better way to go about all that, than just spoiling them silly :o :p

Not really too sure what that is, it looks like a slingshot, on steroids. If a slingshot could be on steroids. Cause that one REALLY is.

Ain't gonna happen. He whined at Vanderbilt. He whined in Denver. He whines in Chicago.
I know... If he would stop pissing off his line he wouldn't take so many hits, he wouldn't have so much to whine about. He's a damn good quarterback, he's got a receiving corps which honestly COULD be one of the best in the league right now. They are head and shoulders taller than their defensive guards, they have speed and stamina. For the first time in a LONG time they have an offense that is legit! Cutler needs to spread out his targeting. Marshall is a beast SURE, however Jeffery is too. Forte is a hell of a running back, sure but they need to develop a wildcat play for him.

Sorry this posted so much later, I had errands to run.

Am I sensing a slight crush on the weather girl? She has perfect teeth.

If you wanna talk cold...

I went to Churchill (on the Hudson Bay) to see Polar Bears last November...it was -20 degrees F. during the day. THAT IS WITHOUT THE WIND CHILL! So it felt like -40 degrees F. during the day, and colder at night when we were watching the northern lights.

I'll be honest, I'd rather live somewhere with a long, cold, snowy winter than a blistering, blazing, disgusting summer. However from what I've seen of Eastern Tennessee it's very nice. I wouldn't mind living there in the fall and spring.

research your breeds carefully -- then read up on the best way to train the one you pick.
Once you have the pup home, it'll only take a few hours to realize 3/4 of what you read works "on average" -- and your pup isn't average. :D

Oh, yeah -- one of the most efficient ways to break a lab pup of biting is to bite him back - on the ear.
though it works really well, I do not recommend this as you will be spitting out dog fur for days afterwards.

And that's just Boulder. My wife is from Gunnison, Colorado, which is one of the 5 coldest cities in the US. I've seen it more than 40 below before wind chill. Cold enough that you can spit and have it freeze before it hits the ground. If you have a cold, forget going outside, because the mucus will freeze solid in your nose, and you won't be able to breathe.

5th: Caribou, Maine.
4th. Jackson, WY
3rd. Gunnison, CO
2nd. International Falls, MN.
1st. Barrow, AK.

Chicago? Hah. Chicago doesn't even make the top 25. Chicago and Denver are pretty comparable in terms of stats. Average winter low of around 22, and record low of a mere -24. However, Chicago's average snowfall is 38.7 inches, with Denver coming in at 57.5 (a 48.6% increase). I'm looking forward to getting out of here. We've got too many Californians now who don't have the foggiest idea how to drive in snow (or how to vote, for that matter).

And those of us in nice "warm" places like Chicago and Denver can be thankful that we don't live in one of those places where you have to keep your car plugged in during the winter if you want it to start.

Why does it not surprise me at all that you have bitten a dog after being bitten LOL! I'm SURE he was surprised. I know if I was sitting there watching it I would be.

Hey Dubz, check out this old Ropp cherry wood pipe I got today. It's the French answer to a corn cob. This one is from the 1950s.
