Hey Dubz, check out this old Ropp cherry wood pipe I got today. It's the French answer to a corn cob. This one is from the 1950s.

Pretty classic looking, "Barlow regal" perhaps.

Man, that is just sick. Love it. There's a few guys on BCUSA that make pipes similar to that.

I'm glad this is a short week....

Our 2 - 4" of snow last night turned into 4 - 6." That's not all that big of a deal for me, but I suppose it is a bit much for other people to comprehend. My 20mi commute this morning took 3 1/2 hours. A sharp and pointy impulse purchase arrived today, so that made it all better.

And that's just Boulder. My wife is from Gunnison, Colorado, which is one of the 5 coldest cities in the US. I've seen it more than 40 below before wind chill. Cold enough that you can spit and have it freeze before it hits the ground. If you have a cold, forget going outside, because the mucus will freeze solid in your nose, and you won't be able to breathe.

5th: Caribou, Maine.
4th. Jackson, WY
3rd. Gunnison, CO
2nd. International Falls, MN.
1st. Barrow, AK.

Chicago? Hah. Chicago doesn't even make the top 25. Chicago and Denver are pretty comparable in terms of stats. Average winter low of around 22, and record low of a mere -24. However, Chicago's average snowfall is 38.7 inches, with Denver coming in at 57.5 (a 48.6% increase). I'm looking forward to getting out of here. We've got too many Californians now who don't have the foggiest idea how to drive in snow (or how to vote, for that matter).

And those of us in nice "warm" places like Chicago and Denver can be thankful that we don't live in one of those places where you have to keep your car plugged in during the winter if you want it to start.

I spent plenty of winters in Upstate NY; not so cold, just long and real snowy. Spent four years of winters in the North Country of NY (where the 10th Mountain Division trains!)- one of which set a record (since broken) for the coldest temp ever in the CONUS: -56°F. We had a whole week of days that would top out at -20° and then back down to the -40's at night; which lasted from 1500 to 0800. When it got up into the teens it was like spring. I don't miss that kinda cold, even though I like winter. Interesting stuff though, spit does freeze before it hits the ground, and if you breathe and blink at the same time, your eyelashes freeze together. Going into neg. temps tonight. Sunday they're forecasting rain and temps in the 40's !?

Our mailman bailed - I was supposed to get something today that was "out for delivery" but blowing snow and very cold temps....I can't say as I blame him, but I was looking forward to the package(s).

ask for that guarantee :>

apparently the mail people don't believe their old motto

research your breeds carefully -- then read up on the best way to train the one you pick.
Once you have the pup home, it'll only take a few hours to realize 3/4 of what you read works "on average" -- and your pup isn't average. :D

Oh, yeah -- one of the most efficient ways to break a lab pup of biting is to bite him back - on the ear.
though it works really well, I do not recommend this as you will be spitting out dog fur for days afterwards.

there are actually a couple good books and techniques. but you have to follow them. a lot.

i know someone that has amazing control of their dog. they've trained it to do most things well. amazing considering how neurotic it was.

some people don't have that mentality or alpha power.

i got jumped by a german shepherd when i was in 8th grade, while delivery papers. i was SO MAD, i jumped on top of that dog, scissored it, grabbed it by the head, and pretty much choked it down to calm serene state :)

then i bit it a bunch of times, ear, nose, shook it, screaming NOOOOOOO at it. owner found me unzipping and i said "yeah, i was going to pee on it". yeah. pee. hahahahahah. j/k. i've heard some people pee on their dog when it pees on their things. don't know if that works.

well, that dog never bothered me again. pissed itself silly. not your normal kind of training ;)

Silverthorn and Psyop Your boxes are shipped. Expected delivery is saturday for both of you. PM me if you need a tracking number.

Hope it arrives tomorrow! It at least better arrive tomorrow.
I was glad to see it arrive and was really hoping they weren't going to use the weather as an excuse. They seem to like to drop the ball when it comes to delivering to my apartment complex.

However from what I've seen of Eastern Tennessee it's very nice. I wouldn't mind living there in the fall and spring.

You're completely wrong. It's AWFUL down here, all year round. Every day is like a visit from the Devil. The climate is terrible and the economy is even worse. Stay away! All of you!

I will continue to do so. Miss Angie and I both agree that the responsibility is on us to pick a little rascal that we are suited for, and can then learn how to take care of properly. :)

My FIL recently lost his beloved Shelty mix to old age... we all knew it was coming... the poor dog was old as dirt and in really bad shape,,, Pa made the terrible decision to have the little darlin' put down, rather than let her suffer any more... :(

Made us all shed many a bitter tear to send Rosie on her way... but it was kindness, mercy, and good stewardship on Pa's part. I'm convinced (as are Miss Angie and her Mama) that is was the right thing to do.

Somewhat to my surprise, Pa has declared that he's ready to maybe consider taking another little pup under his care... which I consider to be a life-affirming, forward-looking attitude.

Dogs and cats are good for people.

Stovegasm! These don't count because I ordered them last year. :p

Sometime soon I will need to learn a lot more about raising a pup. I've never done that before; all our beloved dogs were rescued by Miss Angie from pretty brutal, feral conditions and full-grown when I met them.

I suspect there's a better way to go about all that, than just spoiling them silly :o :p

I use the Kohler method. Some folks don't like his methods, but he was a famous trainer, and it works. My dogs are trained to obey hand signals, but the leash comes first. Start young, its easier.

You can google him, and buy his books from the river store.
